Why Wilderness properties need shadeports

Wilderness sits in a river valley between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. The Touw River and Wilderness lagoon create a humid microclimate with heavy tree cover, abundant birdlife and seasonal rainfall that is heavier than most Garden Route towns. This combination is hard on anything left uncovered outdoors.

Vehicles parked under indigenous trees collect bird droppings, berry stains and tree sap within days. UV exposure on north-facing driveways fades paint and cracks dashboard plastics. Boats, caravans and outdoor furniture deteriorate faster than owners expect between visits. For holiday homes and lock-up-and-go properties, the damage accumulates silently.

A properly engineered shadeport solves all of it. Shade cloth blocks 80 to 95% of UV while letting air circulate, which prevents the heat buildup that closed structures create. Rain passes through the knitted polyethylene weave rather than pooling. Bird droppings land on the cloth, not on your vehicle. The protection is passive, permanent and requires almost no maintenance.

What we build and install

Custom Blinds manufactures shadeports in-house using galvanised steel or powder-coated aluminium frames with high-tensile knitted polyethylene shade cloth. Every structure is custom-sized to your property.

Frame options. Galvanised steel is the most durable choice for Wilderness, where river-valley humidity and proximity to the lagoon accelerate corrosion on untreated metal. Powder-coated aluminium offers a cleaner, more architectural finish and suits estate properties where aesthetics matter. Both frame types are engineered for the Garden Route’s wind conditions.

Shade cloth grades. 80% shade cloth suits general vehicle protection. 90% is the most popular choice for Wilderness, blocking UV while allowing enough airflow to prevent heat buildup underneath. 95% provides near-complete UV block and is specified for boats, caravans and areas where maximum protection is needed.

Configurations. Single bay for one vehicle. Double bay for two vehicles or a vehicle plus trailer. Multi-bay for larger properties, guest houses and commercial sites. Custom widths and depths to fit driveways, carports and outdoor areas of any size.

Wilderness areas we service

Duncan visits Wilderness regularly and knows the conditions at each part of town. Different positions face different challenges, and the shadeport specification changes accordingly.

Wilderness Village. The central residential area along Waterside Road and George Road. Sheltered by indigenous forest, with moderate wind but high humidity and heavy bird activity. Galvanised steel frames and 90% shade cloth are the standard specification here.

Wilderness Heights and Kleinkrantz. Elevated positions with more wind exposure and ocean views. Frames need to be engineered for higher wind loads. Powder-coated aluminium is popular for the cleaner look on hillside properties.

Ebb & Flow and the Touw River area. River-facing properties with the highest humidity in Wilderness. Mould and moisture are constant. Galvanised steel frames resist the sustained damp better than aluminium in these positions. Shade cloth prevents leaf litter and bird droppings accumulating on vehicles and boats.

Hoekwil. Rural properties on the slopes above Wilderness. Larger plots often need multi-bay configurations for vehicles, boats and farm equipment. Wind exposure varies by position. Duncan assesses each site individually.
