01Who is the best awnings company on the Garden Route?
Ask three things: do they manufacture locally, do they install with their own team, and how long have they served this coast. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings manufactures awnings in Knysna, installs with its own team, and has completed over 10,000 installations on the Garden Route since 2010 under founder Duncan Kane’s 20+ years of industry experience.
02Are your awnings actually made in Knysna?
Yes. Canvas, wedge and patio shade awnings and our own outdoor blinds are manufactured in our Knysna workshop. Folding arm and louvred awnings and Ziptrak are designed, supplied and installed, not manufactured. Frames are cut, assembled and powder-coated to your measurements, and the team that builds your awning is the team that installs it.
03Which awning handles Garden Route wind best?
Louvred awnings handle wind best because the aluminium louvres open to spill gusts and the structure is fixed. Folding arm awnings are built to retract, and should be brought in during a strong south-easter. There is no single wind figure that fits every awning, because no two sites are the same. Exposure, size, height and how directly you face the sea all change the answer. Duncan walks the site with you and specifies for your position, then tells you exactly how your awning should be used.
04Do you install outside Knysna?
Yes. Our teams install across the Garden Route, including Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, George, Mossel Bay and Buffalo Bay, from the Knysna workshop.
05What is the difference between a folding arm and a fall arm awning?
A folding arm awning projects horizontally over a patio or entertainment area and retracts flat against the wall. A fall arm awning drops down over a window at an angle to block sun before it reaches the glass. Patios take folding arms; hot north-facing windows take fall arms.
06How do I get a price?
Request a quote online or send your details on WhatsApp. We measure on site, confirm the specification for your wind and sun exposure, and quote on the exact awning, manufactured to your measurements in Knysna.
07Do awnings survive coastal salt air?
Ours are built for it: powder-coated aluminium frames, coated and stainless fittings, and fabrics selected for coastal UV. Salt air destroys standard hardware, which is why local specification matters more at the coast than anywhere else.
