George gets more consistent sunshine than anywhere else on the Garden Route, but the afternoon north-westerly and berg winds create real challenges for awning installations. The right type depends on your patio’s orientation, wind exposure and mounting surface. A design consultation determines this.
Retractable folding arm, louvred aluminium, wedge, patio shade and canvas awnings, with Somfy motorisation and wind sensors on all retractable and louvre systems. Custom Blinds services George, Herolds Bay, Wilderness, Hoekwil, Blanco and surrounding areas.

Sunshine and wind
George sits in the lee of the Outeniqua Mountains. That geography gives it more sunshine hours than Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, but it also channels wind in ways that catch people off guard. The afternoon north-westerly is persistent through summer. Berg wind events in autumn and spring bring sudden hot, dry gusts from the interior. Both conditions demand awnings that are either specified for wind or able to retract safely when conditions change.
The UV index in George regularly exceeds 10 during summer. North-facing patios and entertainment areas absorb direct sun for hours. Without shade, outdoor furniture degrades quickly, patio surfaces become too hot to walk on barefoot, and adjacent rooms overheat. A properly specified awning drops the temperature underneath by 8 to 12°C and extends the usable hours of your outdoor space considerably.
George also has a growing hospitality sector, restaurants, guest houses and boutique hotels along York Street, in the CBD and out towards Herolds Bay all rely on outdoor seating. A well-designed awning is not decoration; it is the difference between a table that earns revenue and one that sits empty on a hot afternoon.
Not every patio in George needs the same solution. A sheltered courtyard in a George retirement village has different requirements to an exposed deck overlooking the golf course at Fancourt or a shopfront on York Street.
Folding-arm awnings extend to provide shade and retract flat against the wall when not needed. This makes them well suited to George, where wind conditions can change within the hour. Motorised versions with Somfy wind sensors retract automatically when gusts exceed safe thresholds, useful for properties left unattended during the day or holiday homes where nobody is there to react.
Spans reach up to 12 metres on a single installation. Acrylic canvas fabrics from Dickson and Tempotest provide UV filtering, water resistance and colour stability in direct sun.
Aluminium louvred awnings use adjustable blades that tilt from fully open to fully closed, giving you precise control over light angle, airflow, and rain drainage. In the closed position the system forms a sealed roof. Tilted open, air moves freely and light filters through at whatever angle suits the time of day. Motorised versions integrate with Somfy controls for scheduled tilt, automatic rain-sensor closure, and app-based operation from anywhere.
George gets more consistent and intense sunshine than most Garden Route towns, which makes louvred awnings particularly well suited here. A north-facing patio that is pleasant at 10 am becomes unbearable by 1 pm without adjustable shade. Motorised louvre blades track the sun as it moves, keeping the space comfortable without manual intervention.
George’s afternoon north-westerly and occasional berg wind create real demands on any permanent structure. Every louvred awning we install in George uses marine-grade powder-coated aluminium frames and stainless steel fixings. Estate properties at Fancourt, Garden Route Mall residential developments, and Herolds Bay coastal sites each present different wind exposure and architectural requirements. We assess each site individually before manufacture.
For properties where body corporate or estate rules require approval, retractable awnings often fall outside structural thresholds. Louvred systems, being permanent structures, typically require a drawing and specification submission. We provide both.
See the full aluminium louvred awnings product guide for blade specifications, colour options, and motorisation details.
For positions that need permanent protection. entrances, shopfronts, loading bays, restaurant frontages, a fixed awning provides continuous shade without any moving parts. Wedge awnings are common along George’s commercial streets.
Fixed awnings handle wind better than retractable systems because the structure is bolted, tensioned and does not rely on arms that extend and retract. For exposed George properties where retracting before every gust is impractical, a fixed solution is often the more reliable choice.
| Type | Best for | Wind | Automation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Retractable Folding-Arm | Patios, decks, entertainment areas | Auto-retracts with Somfy wind sensors | Motorised, wind/sun sensors |
| Aluminium Louvre | Year-round outdoor rooms, braai areas | Fixed structure; blades close in wind | Motorised tilt, rain sensor, app |
| Fixed Wedge / Patio Shade | Shopfronts, entrances, exposed sites | Bolted; handles sustained wind | None (no moving parts) |
| Canvas | Restaurants, guest houses, branded frontages | Tensioned fabric; moderate wind | Manual or motorised |
“George has more consistent sunshine than anywhere else on the Garden Route, but the afternoon north-westerly and berg-wind events ruin awnings that were not specified for it. Every awning we install in George has wind-sensor automated hardware and either auto-retract sensors or a fixed structure that can take sustained gusts. That is the difference between a 5-year and a 15-year installation.”Duncan Kane Founder, Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings
Local knowledge
George covers a wide area with different microclimates. Where your property sits affects which awning type and specification makes sense.
George CBD and York Street. Commercial frontages, restaurants and professional offices. Wedge awnings and branded canvas are common. Wind exposure moderate thanks to surrounding buildings.
Herolds Bay. Coastal, elevated, exposed to both sea breeze and berg wind. Retractable systems with Somfy wind sensors are practical. Louvre awnings work well for sheltered courtyards.
Garden Route Mall area. Newer residential developments with open-plan outdoor living. Folding-arm awnings and louvre systems popular for north-facing patios.
Wilderness side. More sheltered, with indigenous bush providing natural wind protection. Less reliance on auto-retract sensors.
Fancourt and golf estates. Architecturally designed properties often need awnings that complement specific building styles. Powder-coat colour matching and clean aluminium profiles matter. Louvre awnings integrate well with modern estate architecture.
Blanco and Pacaltsdorp. Established residential areas. Canvas folding-arm awnings are cost-effective for standard patio covers. Aluminium louvre upgrades add value during renovation projects.
George receives less salt spray than Knysna or Plettenberg Bay, but UV exposure is higher because cloud cover is less frequent. This shifts the priority from corrosion resistance towards UV stability and heat reflection.
For canvas awnings, we specify Dickson and Tempotest solution-dyed acrylics. colourfast under sustained UV, water-resistant, and breathable enough to avoid heat build-up. We match to your building’s exterior.
Aluminium frames are powder-coated in a range of finishes. Stainless steel fixings are standard on all installations.
For Somfy automation, wind sensors, sun sensors and rain sensors integrate with motorised systems. In George, the wind sensor is the most important. it protects your awning during sudden gusts without you needing to be home.
George’s hospitality industry depends on outdoor seating. From York Street cafés to Herolds Bay restaurants, the ability to keep tables shaded directly affects covers and revenue. We work with restaurant owners and guest house managers to design awning solutions that suit both the dining experience and the building’s character. See our restaurant blinds and awnings page for detail.
Awnings cover overhead. Outdoor blinds cover the sides. In George, the berg wind and afternoon north-westerly drive rain sideways into open patios. Drop-down outdoor blinds in PVC, sheerweave or sidetrack configuration seal your patio against wind and rain while keeping the view.
Clear PVC outdoor blinds are popular in George for braai areas because you keep full visibility. Sheerweave filters light and reduces wind without closing you in. For full wind seal, sidetrack and Ziptrak blinds lock into aluminium channels.

Yes. All retractable and louvre awnings are available with Somfy motorisation. Options include remote control, wall switch, app control and automated sensors for wind, sun and rain.
Most residential awnings are installed in a single day. Larger louvre systems or multi-awning projects may take two days. Lead time is confirmed at quote stage.
Some George estates and body corporates require approval for permanent structures. Retractable awnings often fall outside these requirements. We provide drawings and specifications to support applications.
