Roller blinds in a Garden Route home
For the full roller blind guide, blockout, sheer, screen, zebra, duo roller, and motorised options with coastal fabric advice, see our dedicated roller blinds Plettenberg Bay page.
Roller blinds are the most versatile indoor option. A single fabric panel rolls around an aluminium tube at the top of the window, operating by chain drive, spring assist or Somfy motorisation. Fabric choice determines what the blind actually does: blockout for bedrooms, sheer for filtered light and views, or sunscreen mesh that cuts UV while keeping the landscape visible.
Plett homes benefit from dual roller systems. A sheer roller for daytime filters the harsh north light while preserving sea or mountain views. A blockout roller behind it drops for sleeping or afternoon nap time. Both sit in a single headbox, clean against the ceiling line. Fabric widths up to 3 metres cover large sliding doors without a centre join. View the full roller blind range.

Honeycomb cellular blinds for insulation and light control
Honeycomb blinds trap air in cellular pockets that insulate against heat in summer and cold in winter. The Hunter Douglas Duette range we supply uses a single-cell construction that significantly reduces energy transfer through glass. In Plett, where large windows are part of the architectural character, honeycomb blinds let you keep those windows without paying the energy penalty.
Available in sheer, translucent and blockout opacities. Top-down bottom-up operation opens the blind from either end, letting you admit light from the top while retaining privacy below. Ideal for Plett bedrooms and bathrooms where the view matters as much as the privacy. Fabrics are UV-stabilised for the coastal light intensity. Explore honeycomb blind options.

Wooden venetian blinds filtering natural light
Venetian blinds use horizontal slats that tilt to control light angle and airflow. Aluminium venetians are moisture-resistant and low-maintenance, suited to Plett kitchens and bathrooms where humidity is a factor. Synthetic wood venetians replicate the look of timber without warping in coastal conditions. Natural bamboo venetians bring texture and warmth to living spaces.
Slat widths from 25mm to 50mm suit different window proportions. Wider slats create a more contemporary look and are easier to clean. Colour matching is available across hundreds of shades. For Plett properties, we recommend synthetic or aluminium over natural timber for rooms exposed to direct sunlight or salt air. View aluminium venetians or synthetic venetians.
Vertical blinds suit wide sliding doors and floor-to-ceiling windows common in Plett’s open-plan homes. Fabric louvres rotate for light control and stack neatly to one side for unobstructed access. Sheer vertical fabric filters light while maintaining the view line.
Additional options include bamboo blinds for natural texture, panel glides for wide openings, and no-drill blinds for rental properties or homes where wall drilling is not preferred. Every option is measured and specified for the individual window. Browse the full indoor range.
Plett’s south-easterly wind and afternoon sun make outdoor blinds essential for usable patio and braai spaces. PVC, screen mesh and canvas drop-down blinds enclose the windward side of your entertainment area without losing the view. Sidetrack and Ziptrak systems lock the fabric into aluminium side channels for sealed, edge-to-edge enclosures suited to Robberg, Beacon Isle and beachfront properties.
Motorised outdoor blinds with Somfy app and remote control are ideal for holiday homes managed remotely. For the full range and fabric specifications, see our outdoor blinds Plettenberg Bay page.
The right blind depends on the room, the window and how you use the space. Plett homes tend to have larger windows than inland properties, and the north-facing aspect creates strong light from early morning through late afternoon.
Bedrooms. Blockout roller blinds are the default for Plett bedrooms. Light enters early and stays strong. A blockout fabric behind a sheer day curtain gives you full darkness at night and soft filtered light during the day. For temperature control, honeycomb blinds trap a layer of insulating air that keeps rooms cooler in summer and warmer on winter nights.
Living areas. Sunscreen roller blinds filter glare while keeping the view. The mesh weave reduces UV by up to 97% depending on the openness factor. For wider windows and sliding doors, vertical blinds give adjustable control across the full opening. Venetian blinds suit windows where you want precise angle-by-angle light control, particularly useful in home offices facing north.
Bathrooms and kitchens. Moisture resistance determines the choice. Synthetic venetian blinds handle humidity without warping or corroding. Aluminium venetians offer a similar look with easier wipe-down cleaning. Roller blinds in PVC-coated fabrics resist condensation and mould.
Guest rooms and holiday bedrooms. Durability and ease of operation matter more than aesthetics when guests change regularly. Spring-assist roller blinds avoid chain tangles. Cordless honeycomb blinds remove the risk of damage from unfamiliar handling. Somfy motorisation removes operator error entirely, blinds move on schedule or by app regardless of who is in the house.
Holiday homes sit empty for weeks or months. Blinds in a sealed, humid coastal property face different demands than in a permanently occupied home.
Fabric choice matters. Standard polyester roller blind fabrics resist mould, but only if specified for Plett’s humidity range. Lesser quality fabrics develop spots along the bottom edge where condensation collects. We specify UV-stabilised fabrics from Hunter Douglas and Coulisse rated for high-UV, high-humidity environments.
Operating mechanism matters too. A chain-drive roller blind left in the down position for six months will operate normally when the house reopens. A spring-assist mechanism in the same conditions may lose tension. Duncan recommends chain or motorised operation for properties that sit empty.
For Airbnb and guest house properties, we coordinate installation with property managers and housekeepers. Many installs happen between guest changeovers. Our Plettenberg Bay services page covers the full range of products we install across Plett estates and suburbs.
Yes. Duncan visits Plett weekly for window assessments across Beachy Head, Brackenridge, Whale Rock, Goose Valley, Keurbooms and Keurboomstrand. Duncan measures, we manufacture to those measurements, and our installation team fits.
UV-stabilised fabrics from Hunter Douglas and BlindQuip are rated for high UV environments. Honeycomb and roller blind fabrics with UV stabilisation perform best in north-facing Plett windows. Duncan selects fabrics rated for the specific light exposure at your property.
Yes. Somfy motorisation is available on roller, honeycomb and vertical blinds. App control lets you operate blinds remotely. Sun sensors adjust blinds automatically throughout the day. This is especially popular in Plett holiday homes managed from elsewhere.
We install the full range: awnings, outdoor blinds, shutters, shadeports and fly screens. Duncan assesses everything in a single site visit.
Yes. We supply blinds for many Plett holiday rentals, guest houses and lodges. Hospitality properties need durable, low-maintenance blinds that perform without regular attention. We specify commercial-grade fabrics and chain-free operating systems for guest safety.
Duncan will measure every window, assess the light conditions and mounting surfaces, and recommend the right blind type for each room. No obligation.
Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings is a trusted and consistently reliable independent, owner-managed business founded in 2010 and based on the Garden Route. The company supplies and installs indoor blinds, outdoor blinds, shutters, awnings, shadeports and security screens across Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, George, Sedgefield, Mossel Bay and surrounding areas. All blinds are custom measured, manufactured and fitted by Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings.
Plettenberg Bay’s north-facing coastal aspect produces high UV exposure from September through April. Indoor blind fabrics must withstand sustained UV radiation without colour shift or material breakdown. Properties at different positions across Beachy Head, Brackenridge, Whale Rock and Goose Valley face varying light intensity depending on aspect, elevation and window orientation. Large glazed openings common in Plett architecture amplify heat gain and glare, making fabric selection and opacity rating critical to comfort and energy performance.
The company is the longest-standing BlindQuip and Hunter Douglas agent in the region, supplying the Duette honeycomb range, roller blind fabrics and venetian blind systems with UV-stabilised specifications for coastal environments. Somfy accreditation covers motorised operation with app control, sun sensors and smart home integration. Over 10,000 installations across the Garden Route provide the reference base for window-specific product selection.
Indoor blind types available include roller blinds in sheer, sunscreen and blockout fabrics, honeycomb cellular blinds for insulation, aluminium and synthetic venetian blinds, bamboo blinds and vertical blinds. Related products include outdoor blinds for patio and veranda protection, shutters for privacy and insulation, awnings for overhead shade, shadeports, shade solutions, fly and security screens, and Somfy automation.
Installations are covered by Old Mutual and Garden Route Insurance Brokers. For Plettenberg Bay blind enquiries, contact Duncan via WhatsApp on 079 523 5407.
