Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings | Garden Route & George
Custom-made patio blinds for George’s inland-coastal conditions. PVC, screen mesh, and canvas with side-channel guide systems specified for berg winds, Outeniqua weather shifts, and intense Garden Route UV. Complimentary estimates from your dimensions and photos, anywhere in greater George.
George sits at the foot of the Outeniqua Mountains, in an inland-coastal position that creates its own weather. Berg winds from the north arrive hot and dry, carrying dust and debris. Cold fronts roll in from the south. Summer UV is intense. Afternoon thunderstorms build over the mountains and break across George CBD, Heather Park, and Blanco with little warning.
A national outdoor blinds retailer ships the same product to George as they do to Pretoria. The blind that sits neatly on a Pretoria patio will pull, flap, and fail in a George berg wind within a season if it is not mounted with side-channel guidance, marine-grade hardware, and fabrics rated for sustained UV. Custom Blinds has been specifying, building, and installing outdoor patio blinds across George, the Wilderness end, and the western Garden Route since 2010.
Full weather protection with unobstructed views. Roll down when the rain comes, roll up when it clears. Popular for enclosed patios and stoeps where you want to keep using the space through winter, particularly in the cooler George evenings and Outeniqua frost mornings.
Filter sunlight, reduce wind, and maintain airflow. Available in 1% to 10% openness. Ideal for braai areas and north-facing patios where heat build-up is the main concern. The standard George specification is 5% openness for a balance of shade, view, and breeze.
Full shade and weather protection in a range of fabric colours. Heavier construction for maximum wind resistance. Often specified for large commercial patios, lodge stoeps, and restaurant exteriors around Herolds Bay and Victoria Bay.
All Custom Blinds outdoor blinds run in aluminium side channels that keep the fabric taut in wind. No flapping, no gaps, no damage. This is what separates a properly specified outdoor blind from a lesser quality import, and it is non-negotiable for George conditions.
“George is unusual on the Garden Route. The town sits inland but the weather thinks it is coastal. Berg winds drop a thirty-degree heat day in under an hour. Cold fronts come through fast. We specify every George installation for that variability: marine-grade hardware, side-channel guides, fabrics weighted for the wind load on the position. A blind that works in Pretoria will not last a winter here.”Duncan Kane Founder, Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings
Outdoor blinds installed across George and surrounding areas including Herolds Bay, Victoria Bay, Wilderness Heights, George CBD, Blanco, Kraaibosch, Garden Route Mall precinct, Heather Park, Camphersdrift, Denneoord, Glenbarrie, Kingswood, Fernridge, and Pacaltsdorp.
Every installation starts with a specialist review of your photos. Once you order, we come out to take the final measurements before anything is made. Included in your order. Duncan assesses your specific exposure, wind direction, sun path, rain angle, and recommends the right blind type, fabric, and operating system for your property.
George is the business hub of the western Garden Route with a growing residential estate market. Outdoor blinds add functional outdoor space to new-build estates and older homes alike. For restaurants and hospitality venues around Herolds Bay and Victoria Bay, outdoor blinds extend covered seating capacity year-round and protect alfresco dining areas from sudden weather shifts.
Holiday-home owners benefit most from motorised systems with Somfy sun and wind sensors that operate the blinds automatically while the property is unoccupied. The blinds lower under high UV to protect interiors, retract in heavy wind to prevent damage, and respond to schedules so a returning guest finds the house already shaded.
With proper specification and installation, outdoor blinds last 8 to 12 years in Garden Route conditions, in our experience. The key variables are fabric choice for the exposure, marine-grade hardware throughout, and properly specified side-channel systems. Custom Blinds specifies materials rated for George’s UV intensity, berg-wind load, and inland salt deposition.
It depends on your primary need. Clear PVC gives full weather protection while keeping views, ideal for winter use and rain shelter. Screen mesh gives shade and wind reduction with airflow, better for hot, sunny north-facing positions. Many George homeowners combine both: clear PVC on the weather-exposed sides and mesh where the sun hits hardest.
Yes, when properly installed with side-channel guide systems. The aluminium channels hold the fabric taut and prevent it from flapping or pulling out of the guides. Custom Blinds assesses wind exposure from your photos and at the final measure, and specifies the right channel depth and fabric weight for your specific position.
Yes. Custom Blinds installs Somfy-motorised outdoor blinds with remote control, timer, and sun sensor for light-responsive operation. The system lowers or raises the blinds based on UV levels, particularly useful for George holiday homes and estate properties where the blinds need to manage themselves between visits.
Yes. Screen-mesh drop-down outdoor blinds are available for online order with nationwide delivery via shop.customblinds.co.za. Clear PVC and side-channel systems are Garden Route installation only because they need precise on-site measurement and professional fitting to perform properly in George conditions.
