SHADEMASTER® BY CRAWFORD’S
Shademaster® Blinds,
Garden Route
Some products carry their history in every detail. Crawford’s has been manufacturing window coverings in South Africa since 1885. Custom Blinds installs their Shademaster® range across the Garden Route – because 140 years of South African fabric knowledge is not something you replicate quickly.
What are Shademaster® blinds and why does Custom Blinds install them?
- Shademaster® is the premium blind range manufactured by Crawford’s, a Cape Town company founded in 1885 and one of South Africa’s oldest window covering manufacturers.
- The range covers roller blinds (sheer, blockout, and dual), vertical blinds, aluminium venetians, and solid wood venetians – all made to measure in Crawford’s own factory.
- Smart Screen fabric is engineered for coastal living: it filters UV and heat while preserving outward views, making it ideal for Garden Route homes facing the sea or the Outeniqua Mountains.
- Kleenscreen blockout fabric carries a Sanitized® antimicrobial treatment that resists mould, bacteria, and mildew – critical in the humidity of Knysna, George, and Plettenberg Bay.
- Motorised options are compatible with Somfy and Louvolite One Touch systems for remote or smart home control.
- Custom Blinds supplies and installs Shademaster® across the Garden Route. Call Duncan on 079 523 5407 to arrange a consultation.
Salt air moves through a Garden Route home differently. It settles into fabrics, tests finishes, and exposes anything that was not built for this coast. The blinds that still work after five Knysna winters are the ones worth talking about.
Why does Crawford’s have 140 years of relevance?
Crawford’s started in Cape Town in 1885. That makes them older than the Union of South Africa. They have manufactured through every era of this country’s history – and they are still making blinds in their own factory, with their own fabric technology, on the same continent where the blinds will be installed.
That matters here. South Africa’s climate – extreme UV, coastal humidity, summer heat that can hold 40 degrees for weeks – destroys imported fabrics that were designed for European conditions. Crawford’s developed their core technologies specifically for this climate. The Kleenscreen antimicrobial treatment was not an afterthought for marketing purposes. It was a direct response to what happens inside a coastal bedroom blind over three wet seasons.
Custom Blinds chose Shademaster® for the same reason we chose every product in our range: it survives the Garden Route, and our customers do not have to think about it again.
What does the Shademaster® range include?
The range is wider than most homeowners expect from a single manufacturer. Crawford’s makes everything in-house, which means the quality control is consistent from the fabric roll to the finished blind.
Roller blinds are the core of the range and come in three configurations: sheer (light-filtering with daytime privacy), blockout (full light elimination for bedrooms and media rooms), and dual – a double-roller system that runs both a sheer and a blockout on a single headrail, allowing you to shift between filtered light and full darkness without a second set of tracks.
Smart Screen is Shademaster®’s UV-filtering fabric engineered specifically for coastal exposure. It cuts glare and radiant heat while keeping the view through the window – meaningful on a property facing the Knysna Lagoon or the Plett beach break.
Kleenscreen is the blockout fabric with Sanitized® antimicrobial treatment. In bathrooms, kitchens, and coastal bedrooms where humidity sits high through winter, standard blockout fabrics develop mould at the seams within two seasons. Kleenscreen is engineered to resist that.
Venetian blinds in the Shademaster® range come in solid basswood and aluminium. The wood venetians are a natural fit for the timber-framed homes throughout Knysna, Wilderness, and the Heads. The aluminium range suits modern coastal builds and works in rooms that face direct spray or condensation.
Vertical blinds cover large glass doors and floor-to-ceiling glazing – common in the open-plan beach house architecture of the Garden Route. The vertical louvre system allows precise light direction control without blocking airflow.
Motorisation is available across the Shademaster® roller blind range via Somfy and Louvolite One Touch systems. Somfy’s RTS and io-homecontrol protocols integrate with most smart home platforms. Louvolite’s One Touch system is simple enough for holiday homes and rental properties where guests should not have to navigate a manual chain.

“Every Garden Route home has at least one room that fights you – too bright, too hot, no privacy, or all three at once. The Kleenscreen dual roller is usually the answer. One headrail. Sheer by day, blockout by night. The room stops fighting.” Duncan Kane, Founder – Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings · 20 years experience across the Garden Route
Why does a Garden Route home need coastal-grade fabrics?
The Garden Route sits between the Outeniqua Mountains and the Indian Ocean. That geography creates a specific set of conditions that most window coverings from inland manufacturers or import catalogues were not designed for.
UV intensity at this latitude is high year-round. Summer temperatures in George and Mossel Bay hold above 35 degrees for weeks. Knysna and Plett receive more rainfall than the rest of the Western Cape, and the humidity that follows a winter system can sit inside a house for days. Salt air moves through open windows and settles on every surface, including blind fabric, tracks, and headrails.
Standard imported fabrics bleach at the fold lines, develop mould at the hem, and lose their structural integrity at the seams within two to three seasons under these conditions. Crawford’s fabrics are developed and tested in South Africa, for South African conditions. That is not a marketing claim – it is 140 years of manufacturing decisions informed by exactly this climate.
For homes on the Knysna Heads, facing the Plett estuary, or catching the Wilderness beach wind: the fabric choice matters more than the colour. Get the fabric right, and the blind lasts. Get it wrong, and you are replacing it in season three.

Questions about Shademaster® Blinds
Are Shademaster® blinds available in South Africa?
Yes. Shademaster® is manufactured by Crawford’s in Cape Town and is available across South Africa. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings supplies and installs the full Shademaster® range across the Garden Route – including Knysna, George, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, and Mossel Bay. National online orders are available via the Custom Blinds shop.
What is the difference between Smart Screen and standard sheer fabric?
Smart Screen is a UV-filtering roller blind fabric engineered by Crawford’s for South African coastal conditions. It reduces UV transmission and radiant heat while preserving the outward view through the window. Standard sheer fabric softens light but provides less UV and heat attenuation. For sea-facing rooms or properties with significant sun exposure, Smart Screen is the more capable choice.
What is Kleenscreen and why does it matter in the Garden Route?
Kleenscreen is Crawford’s blockout fabric treated with Sanitized® antimicrobial technology. The treatment inhibits mould, bacteria, and mildew – a meaningful advantage in the Garden Route’s high-humidity winters. Standard blockout fabrics in coastal bedrooms and bathrooms commonly develop mould at the hem and seams within two to three wet seasons. Kleenscreen is designed to resist this degradation.
Can Shademaster® blinds be motorised?
Yes. Shademaster® roller blinds are compatible with Somfy’s RTS and io-homecontrol motorisation systems as well as Louvolite One Touch. Both options allow remote operation via handheld remote, smartphone app, or integration with smart home platforms. Motorised Shademaster® blinds are a practical choice for high windows, elderly homeowners, and holiday or rental properties.
How much do Shademaster® blinds cost on the Garden Route?
Pricing depends on the product type, fabric, dimensions, and whether motorisation is included. Custom Blinds provides a written quote after a free consultation with Duncan Kane. Contact Duncan on 079 523 5407 to arrange a site visit across Knysna, George, Plettenberg Bay, or any Garden Route location. There is no obligation and no call-centre – just the person who will install your blinds.
How long do Shademaster® blinds last in coastal conditions?
Shademaster® blinds are manufactured with South African coastal conditions as part of the design brief. Crawford’s fabrics are tested for UV stability, humidity resistance, and structural integrity under local climate conditions. With correct maintenance – occasional dusting and annual gentle cleaning – a Shademaster® blind installed on the Garden Route should provide eight to twelve years of reliable performance.
