Outdoor Patio Blinds for South African Homes

Quick Answer

What are outdoor patio blinds and which type is best for South African homes?

  • Outdoor patio blinds are roll-up or drop-down blinds mounted on the exterior of a patio, braai area, or deck to control wind, rain, sun, and privacy
  • Screen mesh blinds (5% openness) are the most popular — they reduce wind and glare while keeping airflow and the view intact
  • Clear PVC blinds give maximum visibility and full weather sealing — best for restaurants, entertainment areas, and cold-weather climates
  • Side-channel or guided blinds use aluminium tracks on each side to hold the fabric taut against wind — essential in exposed coastal locations
  • Canvas or blockout blinds provide total shade and privacy but block the view entirely — suited to utility areas rather than entertaining spaces
  • Custom Blinds supplies outdoor blinds nationally and installs across the Garden Route with free site assessments

Clear PVC outdoor blinds on a coastal patio — rain and wind protection with full view — Custom Blinds Garden Route

Clear PVC patio blinds, Garden Route installation

What are clear PVC outdoor blinds and where do they work best?

Keep the view. Block the weather.

Clear PVC outdoor blinds use welded transparent panels to create a rain and wind barrier on your patio or veranda. You see through them as if they’re not there — but the wind, mist, and cold stay outside. Popular for winter entertaining, braai areas, and restaurant frontages across the Garden Route.

Why homeowners choose clear PVC:

  • Full visibility — no loss of view through transparent panels
  • Weather seals and robust hems for wind and rain
  • Welded construction — no stitching to deteriorate
  • Manual or motorised operation
  • Marine-grade hardware for coastal conditions

Outdoor screen mesh drop-down blinds on Thesen Island, Knysna — glare control and privacy

Screen mesh outdoor blinds, Thesen Island, Knysna

How do screen mesh outdoor blinds balance airflow and protection?

Glare down, airflow up, privacy added.

Screen mesh outdoor blinds use UV-stabilised fabric in 5%, 10%, or 15% openness to reduce glare and heat while keeping air flowing. They add daytime privacy without blocking the view entirely. The go-to choice for summer patios, pool decks, and restaurant seating on the Garden Route.

We specify Sheerweave and Sunworker screen fabrics — engineered for UV stability, temperature regulation, and coastal conditions. These fabrics provide up to 99% UV block while maintaining outward visibility, and act as an insulation barrier that reduces heat transfer through your patio or stoep.

Openness guide:

  • 5% openness: maximum privacy and UV block — close to a solid screen
  • 10% openness: balanced privacy with good view-through — the most popular choice
  • 15% openness: maximum view and airflow with light glare reduction

Side-channel guided outdoor blinds with ocean view — wind-rated installation by Custom Blinds

Side-channel outdoor blind system, Garden Route

What are side-channel and guided outdoor blind systems?

Engineered for wind-prone patios.

Side-channel systems run the blind fabric through aluminium tracks on each side of the opening. This eliminates rattle, improves wind resistance, and gives a neat, architectural finish. Specified for exposed Garden Route patios where standard drop-down blinds would flap or fail.

Best for:

  • Exposed patio openings facing prevailing winds
  • Elevated properties with wind funnelling
  • Restaurant and hospitality frontages

Salt rinse for coastal

  • Clean gently with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh chemicals or pressure washers.
  • Retract during storms or sustained high winds.
  • In coastal areas, rinse monthly to remove salt residue from fabric and hardware.
  • Let fabric dry fully before rolling up to prevent mould.
  • Inspect mounting hardware seasonally for optimal tension and corrosion.

We provide maintenance support and service checks for coastal properties. Read our full cleaning guide

Can outdoor blinds be fitted to existing patios?

Yes. Most systems retrofit onto existing pergolas, verandas, and covered patios with minimal disruption. Our installers assess structural support points and alignment to ensure a clean, professional fit. No need to rebuild your patio to get outdoor blind protection.

Outdoor blinds and energy savings

External blinds prevent solar heat from entering your home before it builds up indoors. They keep rooms cooler in summer and help retain warmth in winter, reducing reliance on air conditioning or heating. Both Sheerweave and Sunworker are designed to reduce heat gain through windows and patio openings.

Why Choose Custom Blinds® for Outdoor Blinds?

  • We manufacture: outdoor blinds are made by our team — not outsourced to a third party.
  • Coastal engineering: we specify for wind, salt air, and humidity. Hardware selected for corrosion resistance.
  • Two ways to buy: Garden Route installation with Duncan, or shop online with nationwide delivery.
  • Motorisation ready: Somfy motors available for large spans and daily use, with wind and sun sensors.
  • Measuring support: measuring guide for self-install, or we measure on site.

What other outdoor products complement outdoor blinds?

Frequently Asked Questions: Outdoor Blinds

Which is better for outdoor blinds: clear PVC or screen mesh?
It depends on what you need from the space. Clear PVC creates a fully transparent barrier that blocks rain and wind while keeping your view completely open. It turns a patio into an enclosed room in winter without losing any light. The trade-off is that clear PVC doesn’t breathe, so on a hot day it can feel like a greenhouse if you don’t roll the blinds up. Screen mesh does the opposite: it filters UV and glare, maintains airflow, and you can see out comfortably while reducing visibility from outside during the day. It won’t keep rain out. Duncan will recommend the right combination for your patio based on orientation and how you use the space.

How do outdoor blinds handle wind?
This depends on the system and the installation. Standard drop-down blinds on hooks or clips are fine for sheltered patios but will rattle and can pull free in strong wind. For exposed positions on the Garden Route (and most positions between Wilderness and Plett are exposed), we specify side-channel or Ziptrak systems where the fabric runs inside a guided track bolted to the wall or column. This stops the blind from moving laterally in gusts and eliminates the rattle that drives homeowners mad. The fixing method matters as much as the blind itself. Channels need to be anchored into brick, concrete, or steel, not timber, to handle sustained Garden Route wind. Duncan assesses wind exposure during the site visit and specifies the system accordingly.

Can I motorise outdoor blinds?
Yes. Somfy motors are recommended for large spans and frequent use. Wind and sun sensors can be added for automatic protection and convenience.

Do you install outdoor blinds nationally?
We install across the Garden Route including Knysna, George, Plettenberg Bay, Mossel Bay, Sedgefield, and Wilderness. We also supply nationwide with free delivery and remote measuring support via our online shop.

Can I buy outdoor blinds online?
Yes. Visit shop.customblinds.co.za to order outdoor blinds with free nationwide delivery. A measuring guide is available for self-install.

What is the difference between outdoor blinds and awnings?
Outdoor blinds drop vertically to screen the sides of a patio, blocking wind, glare, and reducing visibility from outside. Awnings extend horizontally overhead to shade from sun and rain. They solve different problems and are often used together. A common setup is a retractable awning overhead for midday sun combined with outdoor blinds on the west-facing side for late afternoon wind and glare. If you can only do one, think about where your discomfort comes from: if it’s overhead sun, start with an awning. If it’s side wind or afternoon glare, start with outdoor blinds.

How do outdoor blinds handle coastal salt air?
The mesh fabrics we use are coated to resist salt, humidity, and mould, which is essential for any coastal installation on the Garden Route. Hardware is marine-grade finished to prevent corrosion. The fabric itself handles salt air well, but the hardware (brackets, bottom bars, channels) is where corrosion shows up first if the specification is wrong. We use stainless steel or marine-grade aluminium on all beachfront installations. Monthly rinsing with fresh water extends the life of both fabric and hardware, particularly at Buffalo Bay, Brenton, and Plett beachfront where salt exposure is heaviest.

What warranty do outdoor blinds come with?
Custom Blinds offers a 5 year warranty on outdoor blinds covering fabric and installation workmanship, plus maintenance support for coastal properties.

Can outdoor blinds reduce energy costs?
Yes, and more effectively than interior blinds. An outdoor blind blocks solar heat before it passes through the glass, which is significantly more efficient than trying to block it after it’s already inside your home. North and west-facing sliding doors and windows are the worst heat sources in summer on the Garden Route, particularly in George where temperatures are higher than the coast. Outdoor blinds on these openings can make the difference between running aircon all afternoon and not needing it. In winter, closed outdoor blinds (especially clear PVC) add an insulating air gap that reduces heat loss through glass. With electricity costs continuing to climb, this is one of the most practical arguments for outdoor blinds. Need indoor blinds too? Honeycomb blinds are the most energy efficient indoor option, with insulating air pockets that reduce heat transfer through the glass. Zebra blinds offer adjustable light control for living areas. For rentals or homes where drilling is not possible, no-drill blinds fit without screws or wall damage. Try our quick quiz to find the right blinds for each room.

What is the best fabric openness for outdoor blinds?
We recommend 5% openness as standard for most Garden Route installations. At 5%, you get strong UV block while still being able to see through the fabric from inside. It also lets a gentle breeze through, which keeps the space comfortable in summer. In heavy rain, fine mist can pass through the mesh at 5% openness. This is normal, not a defect. It’s the trade-off for having airflow. If you want zero mist penetration, clear PVC is the right choice for that side of your patio. 10% openness gives a slightly more open feel with more airflow. 15% is rarely used on the Garden Route because it sacrifices too much UV block for our conditions.

Is Custom Blinds the same as Blind Guys or other franchise operations?
No. Custom Blinds® is an independent, family-owned business based in Knysna since 2010. We are not affiliated with Blind Guys, Blinds 4 Less, or any other franchise operation. Read more about Custom Blinds.

Do outdoor blinds keep rain out?
Clear PVC blinds keep rain out effectively when fully closed and properly tensioned. They create a solid transparent barrier. Screen mesh blinds do not keep rain out. Mesh is designed for airflow, UV reduction, and view, not waterproofing. In heavy rain, fine mist will pass through mesh fabric. This is the nature of the product, not a fault. If you need complete rain protection on one side of your patio, use clear PVC on that face. For overhead rain protection, an awning or louvred system is needed. Outdoor blinds are vertical, not overhead.

How much do outdoor blinds cost on the Garden Route?
Outdoor blind pricing depends on the width and drop of each opening, the fabric type (clear PVC or screen mesh), the operating system (manual or motorised), and whether side channels are needed for wind resistance. A single blind for a standard patio opening costs less than a full set of four or five blinds enclosing an entertainment area. We don’t publish pricing online because every installation is measured and quoted to the specific property. Our quotes include measurement, manufacture, hardware, and installation. WhatsApp Duncan a photo of your patio on 079 523 5407 and he’ll give you a ballpark before the site visit. Outdoor blinds are also available through our online shop with free nationwide delivery if you prefer to measure and install yourself.

Does mesh colour affect the view through outdoor blinds?
Yes. The darker the mesh colour, the better the view out. A charcoal or black mesh gives you the clearest view of your garden or surroundings because the darker fabric reduces glare on the surface of the mesh itself. Lighter colours like cream or beige reflect more light and reduce the clarity of the view. If maintaining a clear view through your outdoor blinds matters to you, choose a darker mesh. Duncan brings fabric samples to the site visit so you can hold them up and see the difference for yourself before committing.
