How long do outdoor blinds last and what care do they need?

Quality outdoor blinds last 8 to 10 years or more with proper care. Both Sheerweave and Sunworker are UV stabilised and moisture resistant, but coastal conditions still need attention.

Which is better for outdoor blinds: clear PVC or screen mesh?
It depends on what you need from the space. Clear PVC creates a fully transparent barrier that blocks rain and wind while keeping your view completely open. It turns a patio into an enclosed room in winter without losing any light. The trade-off is that clear PVC doesn’t breathe, so on a hot day it can feel like a greenhouse if you don’t roll the blinds up. Screen mesh does the opposite: it filters UV and glare, maintains airflow, and you can see out comfortably while reducing visibility from outside during the day. It won’t keep rain out. Duncan will recommend the right combination for your patio based on orientation and how you use the space.

How do outdoor blinds handle wind?
This depends on the system and the installation. Standard drop-down blinds on hooks or clips are fine for sheltered patios but will rattle and can pull free in strong wind. For exposed positions on the Garden Route (and most positions between Wilderness and Plett are exposed), we specify side-channel or Ziptrak systems where the fabric runs inside a guided track bolted to the wall or column. This stops the blind from moving laterally in gusts and eliminates the rattle that drives homeowners mad. The fixing method matters as much as the blind itself. Channels need to be anchored into brick, concrete, or steel, not timber, to handle sustained Garden Route wind. Duncan assesses wind exposure during the site visit and specifies the system accordingly.

Can I motorise outdoor blinds?

What is the difference between outdoor blinds and awnings?
Outdoor blinds drop vertically to screen the sides of a patio, blocking wind, glare, and reducing visibility from outside. Awnings extend horizontally overhead to shade from sun and rain. They solve different problems and are often used together. A common setup is a retractable awning overhead for midday sun combined with outdoor blinds on the west-facing side for late afternoon wind and glare. If you can only do one, think about where your discomfort comes from: if it’s overhead sun, start with an awning. If it’s side wind or afternoon glare, start with outdoor blinds.

How do outdoor blinds handle coastal salt air?
The mesh fabrics we use are coated to resist salt, humidity, and mould, which is essential for any coastal installation on the Garden Route. Hardware is marine-grade finished to prevent corrosion. The fabric itself handles salt air well, but the hardware (brackets, bottom bars, channels) is where corrosion shows up first if the specification is wrong. We use stainless steel or marine-grade aluminium on all beachfront installations. Monthly rinsing with fresh water extends the life of both fabric and hardware, particularly at Buffalo Bay, Brenton, and Plett beachfront where salt exposure is heaviest.

Can outdoor blinds reduce energy costs?
Yes, and more effectively than interior blinds. An outdoor blind blocks solar heat before it passes through the glass, which is significantly more efficient than trying to block it after it’s already inside your home. North and west-facing sliding doors and windows are the worst heat sources in summer on the Garden Route, particularly in George where temperatures are higher than the coast. Outdoor blinds on these openings can make the difference between running aircon all afternoon and not needing it. In winter, closed outdoor blinds (especially clear PVC) add an insulating air gap that reduces heat loss through glass. With electricity costs continuing to climb, this is one of the most practical arguments for outdoor blinds. Need indoor blinds too? What is the best fabric openness for outdoor blinds?
We recommend 5% openness as standard for most Garden Route installations. At 5%, you get strong UV block while still being able to see through the fabric from inside. It also lets a gentle breeze through, which keeps the space comfortable in summer. In heavy rain, fine mist can pass through the mesh at 5% openness. This is normal, not a defect. It’s the trade-off for having airflow. If you want zero mist penetration, clear PVC is the right choice for that side of your patio. 10% openness gives a slightly more open feel with more airflow. 15% is rarely used on the Garden Route because it sacrifices too much UV block for our conditions.

Do outdoor blinds keep rain out?
Clear PVC blinds keep rain out effectively when fully closed and properly tensioned. They create a solid transparent barrier. Screen mesh blinds do not keep rain out. Mesh is designed for airflow, UV reduction, and view, not waterproofing. In heavy rain, fine mist will pass through mesh fabric. This is the nature of the product, not a fault. If you need complete rain protection on one side of your patio, use clear PVC on that face. For overhead rain protection, an awning or louvred system is needed. Outdoor blinds are vertical, not overhead.

How much do outdoor blinds cost on the Garden Route?
Outdoor blind pricing depends on the width and drop of each opening, the fabric type (clear PVC or screen mesh), the operating system (manual or motorised), and whether side channels are needed for wind resistance. Does mesh colour affect the view through outdoor blinds?
Yes. The darker the mesh colour, the better the view out. A charcoal or black mesh gives you the clearest view of your garden or surroundings because the darker fabric reduces glare on the surface of the mesh itself. Lighter colours like cream or beige reflect more light and reduce the clarity of the view. If maintaining a clear view through your outdoor blinds matters to you, choose a darker mesh.
