Outdoor blinds, awnings and shutters, built for South African weather

The complete guide to three outdoor product categories: outdoor blinds shipped nationally from Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings, and awnings and shutters installed across the Garden Route by a local team with 15 years on the coast.

Quick Answer

Which outdoor product suits your space, and what does Custom Blinds actually supply?

  • Outdoor blinds enclose the sides of a patio. Custom Blinds ships made-to-measure outdoor blinds nationally across South Africa in Screentex, Sunworker and Sheerweave screen mesh.
  • Awnings provide overhead shade. Custom Lifestyle Awnings in canvas, louvre and retractable configurations are installed in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George and across the Garden Route only.
  • Outdoor shutters add aluminium security and storm protection. Custom Blinds fits aluminium security shutters across the Garden Route, supported by a 10-year warranty.
  • Clear PVC and solid canvas outdoor blinds are Garden Route installation only. Site measurement and fitting are part of the specification.

A patio that works in every season is the difference between a room you use and one you look at. The right combination of blinds, overhead cover and shutters turns weather from a problem into a detail.

What are outdoor blinds, awnings and shutters, and how do they differ?

Three outdoor product categories solve three different problems. Outdoor blinds drop down the sides of a patio to block wind, sideways rain and low sun. Awnings extend overhead to provide shade and cover from vertical rain. Shutters fit to windows and doors to add weather-rated security that stays on the building year round. Most working outdoor spaces on the South African coast use at least two of the three.

The geography matters. Outdoor blinds ship flat and install with standard hardware, so Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings delivers them to any address in South Africa through shop.customblinds.co.za. Awnings and shutters are a different specification. They require a site visit, structural assessment of the mounting surface, and a fitting crew. That work is delivered only where Custom Blinds has a physical team: Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George, Sedgefield, Mossel Bay, Buffalo Bay and Wilderness.

If you are looking for a single-category primer, start with the outdoor blinds national page, the awnings hub, or the shutters hub. This guide covers all three together, for patios where the decision is which combination to specify.

Terminology used on this site. Outdoor blinds, also called patio blinds or drop-down blinds. Retractable folding-arm awnings, sometimes called folding arm awnings. Louvre awnings, also called aluminium louvre roofs or adjustable blade awnings. Aluminium security shutters, also called roller shutters. These are not interchangeable products, and this guide treats each separately.

Outdoor blinds, the national product that ships anywhere in South Africa

Outdoor blinds are the most practical piece of the outdoor system. A roller tube mounts above the opening, the fabric drops down on guides or cables, and a crank or motor raises and lowers it. The fabric does the work, so the specification conversation is mostly about fabric.

Custom Blinds South Africa supplies five outdoor fabric types. For national shipments the range is screen mesh in three specifications. For Garden Route installations the range extends to clear PVC and solid canvas.

Screentex, the national standard mesh

Screentex is a polyester core with a heavy PVC coating and a basket weave construction. It is the national default for outdoor blinds because it ships flat, installs with standard hardware, and holds up to a decade in South African coastal conditions without colour shift or mechanical failure. Screentex is the right choice for most residential patios where the primary problem is sun, low-angle glare and moderate wind.

Sunworker, specified for coast, wind, wide spans and commercial

Sunworker uses a Rachel Trameur warp-knit construction. The individual polyester threads move independently under load, which distributes wind pressure across the entire surface rather than concentrating it at a single stitch point. Custom Blinds specifies Sunworker for coastal exposure (Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, Cape Town, Durban), high-wind inland sites, wide spans above 3.5 metres, and commercial installations where the blind goes up and down multiple times a day.

Sheerweave, available on request with side tracks

Sheerweave is in the Custom Blinds range but is less popular than Screentex or Sunworker. Years of installation experience show Sheerweave performs best when paired with side tracks or guide cables that hold the fabric under constant tension, particularly on wider openings. It is available nationally on request and suits buyers who want its particular weave aesthetic and plan to install with side channels.

Clear PVC, Garden Route installation only

Clear PVC outdoor blinds seal an opening completely. They block wind, rain and spray while keeping the view and daylight. PVC must be measured, cut and fitted on site because misaligned panels trap moisture and distort. For that reason Custom Blinds installs clear PVC only in its Garden Route service area. A restaurant example at East Head Cafe in Knysna is visible below.

Canvas, commercial and carports, Garden Route installation only

Solid canvas (ripstop) outdoor blinds are used where full visual privacy and complete weather sealing are required. Commercial awnings at Garden Route hotels, guest house courtyards, and carport applications are typical use cases. Like clear PVC, canvas is a Garden Route installation product only.

Awnings, the Garden Route overhead shade specification

Awnings cover the part of a patio that outdoor blinds cannot reach, the overhead. They break vertical sun, shed direct rain away from the building face, and let a covered entertainment area work in both summer and winter. Custom Lifestyle Awnings are manufactured in canvas locally in Knysna and installed by the Custom Blinds team across the Garden Route. They are not a national product.

Retractable folding-arm awnings

A retractable awning uses a motorised or manual mechanism to extend a fabric canopy from a wall-mounted housing. The awning pulls out when shade is wanted and retracts when it is not. Retractable canvas is the go-to choice where the view needs to be preserved and overhead cover is only required at certain times of day. See the dedicated retractable folding-arm awnings page for the specification.

Louvre awnings

A louvre awning is a fixed aluminium structure with rotating blades. Closed, it sheds rain like a solid roof. Open, it lets sun and breeze through like a pergola. Motorised louvre awnings respond to a rain sensor automatically. Most commercial and high-end residential Garden Route patios now specify a louvre system because it is the only awning that handles both sun and rain without adjustment. See louvre awnings.

Wedge, fall-arm and fixed canvas awnings

Wedge awnings and fall-arm awnings are fixed or semi-fixed canvas structures suited to windows, shop frontages and balconies. Fall-arm variants extend outward and downward at an angle, ideal where sun is low in the sky. Custom Blinds manufactures these in canvas in Knysna. See fall-arm awnings for detail.

The full awning range, pricing, and Garden Route location pages are indexed at the awnings hub. Awnings are never shipped as flat-pack. Every installation requires a site visit and structural check.

Outdoor shutters, Garden Route security and weather protection

Shutters are the third category in the outdoor system, though they live on the face of the building rather than around the patio. Aluminium security shutters add engineered weather protection and physical security to windows and doors. They roll down from an aluminium housing mounted above the opening and lock into position.

Custom Blinds fits aluminium security shutters across the Garden Route. The product is covered by a 10-year warranty. This is not a national product because installation requires an on-site electrical connection (for motorised units), structural anchoring, and a fitting team. Indoor PVC shutters are a separate category with a 3-year warranty. See aluminium security shutters and the shutters hub.

Insurance note. Custom Blinds does not provide insurance certificates. Homeowners assessing security shutters should refer to their insurer directly for applicable discounts on premiums.

"The three categories work together. Outdoor blinds handle the sides. Awnings handle the top. Shutters lock the building down when you are away. Specify them as a system, not three separate purchases, and the patio will work in every season."

Which outdoor materials last on the South African coast?

Material choice is where most outdoor spaces succeed or fail. Salt air, intense UV, wind loading and heavy rain put loads on outdoor materials that indoor products never see. The rules are different on the coast than inland, and different again at commercial density of use.

Materials that last

Powder-coated aluminium frames (for louvre awnings, retractable awning arms, and security shutter housings) last 15 years or more in Garden Route conditions if the coating is not damaged. Stainless steel fittings last indefinitely. Screentex and Sunworker fabrics are still performing after 10 years on coastal patios when they are raised in severe storms and cleaned occasionally. PVC-coated canvas holds up 7 to 10 years before the coating starts to degrade.

Materials to avoid on the coast

Mild steel rusts. Untreated timber warps and rots in a year or two. Residential-grade zipper systems break down under UV. Non-marine grade fabric fades within a season. None of the above appear in the Custom Blinds range, but they do appear in cheaper imported products sold online.

Common installation mistakes

Underestimating wind loading is the most common mistake. Coastal gusts reach 80 km/h routinely and a wide unrestrained blind can tear itself off a wall. Side tracks or proper cable tensioning are non-negotiable above 3 metres. Poor drainage detail is the second common mistake. Water that pools on top of retracted fabric accelerates failure. Ignoring the overhead is the third mistake. Outdoor blinds on the sides of a patio with no overhead cover provide partial protection only. Vertical rain still comes through.

For a deeper material comparison, see what blinds, shutters or awnings will last at the coast.

How to combine outdoor blinds with overhead cover on your patio

The single most useful framework is to name the dominant problem first, then specify. Every South African patio has a dominant weather problem. The specification follows.

If wind is the main problem

Outdoor blinds on the exposed sides, Sunworker mesh for Garden Route and coastal sites, side tracks or guide cables if the span exceeds three metres. Overhead cover helps anchor the system against uplift. For homes in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay or Sedgefield, this is the standard specification.

If sun and heat are the main problem

Start with overhead cover. A louvre awning that can be adjusted through the day, or a retractable awning that pulls out at midday, gives the biggest reduction in patio temperature. Add outdoor blinds on the two sides where low-angle sun hits morning and evening.

If rain is the main problem

A solid overhead is essential. A louvre awning closed, or a pitched fixed canvas awning, sheds vertical rain. Sides then get either clear PVC (to keep the view) or screen mesh (to keep the breeze). This is the typical restaurant and guest house specification, often fitted with a rain sensor on the louvre.

If security is the main problem

Aluminium security shutters on ground-floor windows and sliding doors. Outdoor blinds and awnings are not a security product and should never be specified as such. Security shutters lock into aluminium guides and form a physical barrier. Pair them with outdoor blinds for the patio enclosure and, if needed, a motorised system so shutters close on a schedule when the property is unoccupied.

What works for holiday homes, guest houses and Airbnb

Motorised outdoor blinds and a louvre awning are the combination that Garden Route guest house operators most commonly specify. Guests get a patio that works in any weather without needing to be shown how. A rain sensor closes the louvre automatically if a storm hits at 2am. Security shutters are added on entry points. See outdoor blinds for braai areas for a worked example.

Can outdoor blinds and awnings be motorised?

Yes, and on wide or high installations motorisation is the default rather than the upgrade. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings is an accredited Somfy expert and a Motion by Coulisse partner. Motors fit inside the roller tube and connect to wall switches, remote controls, or a smart home hub for phone and voice control.

For outdoor blinds above about three metres wide, cranking by hand becomes impractical. For louvre awnings, motorisation unlocks rain sensors and sun sensors that adjust blade angle automatically. For security shutters, motorised units can be scheduled to close overnight and open in the morning. The upgrade is most valuable where the system is used daily, which is why guest houses and commercial properties almost always specify it.

Frequently asked questions about outdoor blinds, awnings and shutters in South Africa

What is the best outdoor blind material for the South African coast?

Sunworker screen mesh is the right specification for coastal exposure, high-wind sites, wide spans and commercial use. Its Rachel Trameur warp-knit construction distributes wind pressure across the whole surface. For sheltered residential patios and moderate conditions, Screentex delivers comparable UV and privacy performance at a lower price point. Both ship nationally from Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings.

Does Custom Blinds ship awnings and shutters nationally?

No. Awnings and shutters are installed only in Custom Blinds' Garden Route service area: Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George, Sedgefield, Mossel Bay, Buffalo Bay and Wilderness. Installation requires a site visit, structural assessment and fitting crew. Outdoor blinds in screen mesh ship nationally. Clear PVC and solid canvas outdoor blinds are Garden Route installation only, for the same site-fitting reason.

Should I choose outdoor blinds or awnings for my patio?

Most working patios need both. Outdoor blinds enclose the sides and block wind, sideways rain and low sun. Awnings cover the overhead and handle vertical sun and rain. Specifying them together is almost always more effective than specifying one and hoping it covers everything. The exception is a small balcony where only one axis needs protection.

Can outdoor blinds be motorised?

Yes. Custom Blinds is an accredited Somfy expert and Motion by Coulisse partner. Motors fit inside the roller tube and connect to wall switches, remote controls, or a smart hub for phone and voice control. Motorisation becomes the default rather than an upgrade on blinds wider than three metres, on high-mounted blinds, and on any system used multiple times a day.

Why does Custom Blinds lead with Screentex and Sunworker?

Screentex and Sunworker are the outdoor mesh fabrics that ship flat, install with standard hardware, and have passed fifteen years of Garden Route coastal testing for UV resistance, colour retention, and structural integrity. Sheerweave is in the range and works well when paired with side tracks, but performs less consistently without that support on wider spans. Clear PVC and canvas are Garden Route installation products because they have to be fitted on site.

How long do outdoor blinds, awnings and shutters last in South Africa?

Sunworker and Screentex outdoor blinds routinely perform 10 years plus in Garden Route coastal conditions with reasonable care. Powder-coated aluminium louvre awnings and security shutter housings last 15 years or more. PVC-coated canvas awnings last 7 to 10 years. Custom Blinds outdoor blinds carry a 5-year warranty. Aluminium security shutters carry a 10-year warranty.

Do aluminium security shutters qualify for insurance discounts?

Custom Blinds does not provide insurance certificates, and insurance discounts depend entirely on your specific insurer's criteria. Homeowners considering shutters for insurance benefit should confirm the product specification directly with their insurer. What Custom Blinds can confirm is that its aluminium security shutters are covered by a 10-year warranty and are installed across the Garden Route with motorised options available.

Do you install outdoor products in Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and George?

Yes. Custom Blinds is based in Knysna and installs awnings, shutters, and specialised outdoor blinds (clear PVC, canvas) across the entire Garden Route: Knysna, Plettenberg Bay, George, Sedgefield, Mossel Bay, Buffalo Bay and Wilderness. For the Garden Route service, book a free site consultation with the installation team.

What is the Custom Fit Guarantee?

If a made-to-measure blind arrives too big for the opening, Custom Blinds trims it to the correct size at no charge. If it arrives too small, you receive 5 percent off a replacement. The guarantee exists because measuring for outdoor blinds around irregular pillars and openings can be tricky, and Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings absorbs that risk rather than pass it on.
