Sheerweave is in the Custom Blinds range but is less popular than Screentex or Sunworker. Years of installation experience show Sheerweave performs best when paired with side tracks or guide cables that hold the fabric under constant tension, particularly on wider openings. It is available nationally on request and suits buyers who want its particular weave aesthetic and plan to install with side channels.

Clear PVC, Garden Route installation only

Clear PVC outdoor blinds seal an opening completely. They block wind, rain and spray while keeping the view and daylight. PVC must be measured, cut and fitted on site because misaligned panels trap moisture and distort. For that reason Custom Blinds installs clear PVC only in its Garden Route service area. Canvas, commercial and carports, Garden Route installation only

Awnings, the Garden Route overhead shade specification

Awnings cover the part of a patio that outdoor blinds cannot reach, the overhead. They break vertical sun, shed direct rain away from the building face, and let a covered entertainment area work in both summer and winter. Outdoor shutters, Garden Route security and weather protection

Shutters are the third category in the outdoor system, though they live on the face of the building rather than around the patio. Aluminium security shutters add engineered weather protection and physical security to windows and doors. They roll down from an aluminium housing mounted above the opening and lock into position.

Which outdoor materials last on the South African coast?

Material choice is where most outdoor spaces succeed or fail. Salt air, intense UV, wind loading and heavy rain put loads on outdoor materials that indoor products never see. The rules are different on the coast than inland, and different again at commercial density of use.

Materials that last

Powder-coated aluminium frames (for louvre awnings, retractable awning arms, and security shutter housings) last 15 years or more in Garden Route conditions if the coating is not damaged. Stainless steel fittings last indefinitely. Screentex and Sunworker fabrics are still performing after 10 years on coastal patios when they are raised in severe storms and cleaned occasionally. PVC-coated canvas holds up 7 to 10 years before the coating starts to degrade.

Materials to avoid on the coast

Mild steel rusts. Untreated timber warps and rots in a year or two. Residential-grade zipper systems break down under UV. Non-marine grade fabric fades within a season. None of the above appear in the Custom Blinds range, but they do appear in cheaper imported products sold online.

Common installation mistakes

Underestimating wind loading is the most common mistake. Coastal gusts reach 80 km/h routinely and a wide unrestrained blind can tear itself off a wall. Side tracks or proper cable tensioning are non-negotiable above 3 metres. Poor drainage detail is the second common mistake. Water that pools on top of retracted fabric accelerates failure. How to combine outdoor blinds with overhead cover on your patio

If wind is the main problem
