Blinds vs Curtains in South Africa

Some mornings the light wakes you gently. Others it floods the room. Which one behaves depends on more than style.

Should I choose blinds or curtains for my South African home?

  1. Blinds give adjustable light control slat by slat; curtains are open or closed with little in between
  2. On the coast, blinds in PVC, aluminium or faux wood resist salt air and humidity far better than fabric
  3. Curtains insulate and absorb noise better, especially thermal-backed or triple-lined
  4. Blinds typically cost less per window: from R512 for a small vertical blind or R610 for a sheer roller
  5. Blinds last 10 to 20 years in South African conditions; coastal curtains typically need replacing every 3 to 7 years
  6. For many homes the answer is both: a sheer curtain with a blockout blind gives light, privacy and insulation

Blinds vs curtains: the verdict

Blinds outperform curtains on durability, maintenance and light control in coastal and high-UV South Africa. Curtains win on insulation and quiet. Choose by room, not by trend.

Blinds

Control, coast, lifespan

Light
Precise and variable, slat by slat
Care
A damp cloth, two minutes, nothing to unhook
Coast
PVC, aluminium and plaswood resist salt, damp and UV
Lasts
10 to 20 years and more
From

Curtains

Warmth, softness, quiet

Light
Open or closed; blackout lining helps, no mid-range
Care
Take down, wash or dry clean, re-hang, several times a year
Coast
Fabric holds damp against the wall, fades, grows mould
Lasts
3 to 7 years on the coast
From
R199 a ready-made panel to R5,000 and more custom
“I have been installing blinds, shutters and awnings in Garden Route homes for 20 years. I do not install curtains, but I see what happens to them. Fabric fades, collects mould, needs replacing. The blinds we fitted a decade ago still work. When clients ask me blinds or curtains, I ask them which room. A bedroom might benefit from curtains for warmth. But for anything coastal, anything with moisture, anything that needs to last, blinds win.”

How blinds and curtains feel

Mornings where the light behaves. Afternoons where the heat stays out. Evenings where the street disappears.

Why South Africa changes the answer

Most guides are written for the UK or Australia. Two things shift it here.

UV

Among the highest levels in the world. Standard curtain fabric fades, weakens and degrades within a few years. UV-stabilised blinds are built for it.

Humidity and salt

On the Garden Route, Cape and KZN coasts, moisture is constant. Fabric absorbs it and holds it against the wall; black mould follows in the Cape.

The rooms

A bedroom may still want curtains for warmth. Anything coastal, anything with moisture, anything that must last: blinds.

05   Both together

The blind does the work. The curtain does the atmosphere.

Layer a sheer curtain over a blockout blind: softness and warmth by day, complete darkness and UV protection when the blind comes down at night, insulation and quiet from the two together. For homes on the Knysna lagoon, Plettenberg Bay estates and exposed George suburbs, it is the approach recommended most.

OrderSheer curtain for daytime softness. Blockout blind for darkness and UV. Both for insulation and noise.

What blinds and curtains cost

Per window. Over ten years, blinds almost always cost less, particularly at the coast.

Blinds
Aluminium venetian from R550, sheer roller from R671, plaswood venetian from R847, zebra from R1,770 on the live shop; larger windows and motorisation take them higher
Curtains
Ready-made panels R199 to R999; custom from R275 a drop plus fabric; full custom R1,000 to R3,300 and up; premium thermal triple pinch pleat R2,500 to R5,000 and up
Ten years
A sheer roller that lasts twenty years is a few tens of rand a year. A R2,500 custom curtain replaced every five years on the coast is R500 a year

Questions buyers ask about blinds vs curtains

Which is best for a coastal home, blinds or curtains?

Blinds, in PVC, aluminium or plaswood. They resist salt air, humidity and UV; curtain fabric absorbs damp, grows mould and fades within a few years. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings has fitted Garden Route coastal homes since 2010.

What is the difference between blinds and curtains?

Blinds are rigid or rolling coverings with adjustable light control that clean in place. Curtains are fabric panels that are open or closed, insulate and absorb sound better, and need removing to clean.

Do blinds cost less than curtains in South Africa?

Usually, per window and over time. Blinds run from R512 on the live shop; custom curtains from about R1,000 to R5,000 a window, and coastal curtains need replacing sooner.

Can you use blinds and curtains together?

Yes, and it is often the best answer: a sheer curtain over a blockout blind gives softness by day, darkness by night, and insulation and quiet from both.

Do curtains or blinds block more light?

A blockout roller or blockout honeycomb blocks the most; side channels close the edge gaps. Blackout-lined curtains do well but leave light at the top and sides.

Which lasts longer in South African sun?

Blinds. UV-stabilised aluminium and PVC last a decade and more in direct sun; curtain fabric degrades within a few years.
