Blinds Maintenance in Holiday Homes

You arrive in December to open up. Stale air, sticky shutters, salt dust on every surface. It does not have to start with a cleaning shift.

How do you maintain blinds in a holiday home in South Africa?

  1. Wipe PVC shutters and roller blinds with a damp cloth and mild detergent every quarter, or at every guest turnover
  2. Leave louvres or blinds slightly open when the house is empty so air moves and moisture cannot build
  3. Choose PVC or aluminium products for coastal holiday homes; they resist salt air, humidity and UV where timber does not
  4. Inspect mechanisms, cords and brackets twice a year for salt corrosion or guest wear
  5. Motorised blinds reduce guest damage and let an owner elsewhere in South Africa operate them remotely
  6. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings installs across Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and George; broken indoor blind parts are replaced through the online shop

Four holiday home blind problems

A permanent home gets attention every day. A holiday home gets salt all year and a guest who never read the manual.

02

Which blinds survive in holiday homes

The reliable products share three things: moisture resistance, few moving parts, and surfaces that wipe clean in seconds.

PVC shutters

Waterproof louvres, no corrosion, robust under guest handling. A damp cloth in two minutes.

Roller blockout

Synthetic fabric, a simple mechanism, wiped in a minute. Neutral tones photograph well.

Not timber

Timber shutters swell in humidity and the hinges corrode. A guest forcing a swollen louvre means a replacement panel.

Three dots best. No dots not recommended for a coastal holiday home.

The holiday home blind routine

Not much time. The right timing.

  1. Every turnover

Dust slats and louvres with a dry microfibre. Wipe salt off sills and hardware. Check every blind opens, closes and locks. Leave blinds partly open until the next guest.

  2. Every quarter

Deep clean with mild detergent and warm water, never harsh chemicals. Inspect cords, chains and brackets for corrosion. Silicone spray on shutter hinges and roller mechanisms. Test motorised blinds and replace remote batteries.

  3. Before December

Walk every window. Worn parts for indoor blinds are replaced through the online shop; shutters and awnings on the Garden Route are Duncan’s call.

05   Keeping mould out

Leave the blind slightly open.

It sounds wrong, but a small gap lets air circulate behind the blind and removes the dead pocket where moisture collects. PVC shutters: tilt the louvres to about 30 degrees; light and air pass, privacy from the street holds. Roller blinds: leave them raised about 15 centimetres off the sill, where condensation forms.

Found mould already? One part white vinegar to four parts warm water. Never bleach on coloured or coated surfaces. Stubborn mould on fabric is safer professionally cleaned than scrubbed.

06

Guest-proofing holiday home blinds

Guests are not the enemy. They are tired from the drive down from Gauteng and unfamiliar with your windows.

Cordless or motorised
Removes the most common failure point
An instruction card
A simple card at each window, especially for shutters with tilt-and-lock
PVC over timber
A guest who forces a stuck PVC louvre will not break it
Sun
Ask guests, on the card, to raise blinds in full afternoon sun

Questions buyers ask about holiday home blinds

What are the best blinds for a holiday home on the Garden Route?

PVC shutters, blockout roller blinds and aluminium venetians. All three resist moisture and salt air, have few moving parts and wipe clean between guests. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings installs them across Knysna, Plettenberg Bay and George.

How do I stop mould on blinds in a closed holiday home?

Leave louvres tilted about 30 degrees or roller blinds raised about 15 centimetres when the house is empty, so air moves behind them. Wipe existing mould with one part white vinegar to four parts warm water.

How often should holiday home blinds be cleaned?

Dust and check at every guest turnover; deep clean with mild detergent and inspect hardware every quarter; walk every window before the December season.

Are timber shutters suitable for a coastal holiday home?

No. Humidity swells the wood, salt corrodes the hinges, and a forced louvre means a replacement panel. PVC shutters give the look without the risk.

What if a guest breaks a blind?

Replacement parts for indoor blinds are ordered through the online shop. Choosing cordless or motorised blinds and leaving an instruction card at each window removes most of the causes.
