How to Measure for Outdoor Blinds

Patio openings are rarely square. Four readings, in millimetres, recorded separately, and the blind is made to fit the opening you actually have.

How do I measure a patio opening for outdoor blinds?

  1. Top width, where the headrail will mount, and bottom width; on most patios the two differ
  2. Left height and right height; patio floors fall for drainage
  3. Record all four in millimetres, separately. Do not average them
  4. Measure between the surfaces the blind will fix to: post to post, wall to wall, or beam to floor
  5. Send photos of the opening with the tape visible to WhatsApp 076 022 8410, or call Duncan on 079 523 5407 on the Garden Route, and the sizes are checked before anything is cut

Four readings for measuring outdoor blinds

  1. Top width

Across the opening at the height the headrail will fix.

  2. Bottom width

Across the opening at the bottom rail. Note which is smaller.

  3. Left and right height

From the headrail line to the floor or bottom fixing on each side.

  4. Fixing points

Photograph what the blind fixes to: timber, steel, concrete, plaster. It decides the brackets.

Side channels, Ziptrak and motorised systems are measured on site.

Exposed patios need the fabric restrained on both edges. Those systems, and any motorised blind, are specified and measured by Duncan on the Garden Route and fitted by the Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings team. Drop-down clear PVC, sheerweave and canvas blinds ship nationwide for self-installation.
