Which Way to Tilt Blinds for Privacy?

Most people tilt their blinds the wrong way. The direction depends on the time of day, who is looking in, and where they are standing.

Which way should blinds tilt for privacy?

  1. At night, lights on inside: tilt the slats up, rounded side facing you, window edge angled down. Sightlines from street level and eye height are blocked
  2. By day: tilt the slats down to filter light into the room and deflect direct sun; passers-by cannot see in clearly
  3. Someone above you, an upper floor, a balcony, a hillside: tilt down
  4. Vertical blinds: rotate the vanes so the convex side faces the street; the same principle turned ninety degrees
  5. Quick rule: up at night, down by day. Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings makes venetians in five materials, delivered free nationwide

The blind tilt rule

  1. NightLights on inside, dark outside. Tilt up: the rounded face of each slat toward the room, the window edge down. From the street the slats present their faces, not their gaps.
  2. DayTilt down: light filters in off the slat faces, direct sun is deflected, and the view in from outside is broken.
  3. Looking down at youAn upper floor across the road, a balcony, a hillside house: tilt down, whatever the hour.
  4. The balanceA slight upward tilt, neither open nor closed, gives diffused light and an obscured view; living rooms and home offices.

Blinds tilted up or down

The same blind, two jobs.

Up

When
Night, lights on inside
Blocks

Total dark

Down

When
Daytime
Does
Filters light in, deflects direct sun, breaks the view in
Overlooked
An upper floor, balcony or hillside looking down: tilt down whatever the hour

Tilting blinds for summer and winter

The same tilt that sets privacy also moves the sun’s heat.

Summer, tilt up
Slats tilted up send direct sun to the ceiling instead of onto you and the floor, and bounce more heat back out of the window. North- and west-facing rooms gain most
Winter, tilt down
Slats tilted down let low winter sun reach the floor and lower walls, which soak up its warmth. Open the blind fully on sunny days for the most free heat
Night
Tilt up and close, as for privacy

04   Check it

Check your blinds from the street.

If you can see shapes or movement inside, tilt a few degrees further. You should see only the face of each slat, not the gap between. Do the test at dusk with the lights on, when the room is at its most visible.

05

Blind slat width

25mm
Overlaps more tightly and leaves fewer gaps when tilted; standard residential windows, home offices, compact bathrooms
50mm
Bolder light shaping, larger gaps when partly open; wide windows and big rooms, tilted a little further for privacy
Vertical vanes
127mm, rotated so the convex side faces out
“People always ask which blind is best. I ask them what annoys them most about their window right now. Nine times out of ten, it is either privacy or heat, and venetians solve both with a single tilt.”
Duncan Kane Founder, Custom Blinds Shutters & Awnings

Venetian blind material by room

The tilt is half of privacy; the slat decides where the blind can live.

  • Aluwood venetian blinds for bedrooms

Aluwood in 50mm for the timber look, or a blockout roller behind for full dark.

    Aluwood
  • Aluminium or plaswood blinds for bathrooms and kitchens

Aluminium or plaswood: steam and splashes do not touch them.

    Aluminium, plaswood
  • Basswood or aluwood venetians for living rooms

Real basswood 50mm where the room is dry; aluwood at the coast.

    Wood, aluwood
  • Aluminium venetians for north-facing windows

25mm aluminium, tilted down through the day against the sun.

Questions buyers ask about tilting blinds for privacy

Should venetian blinds tilt up or down for privacy?

Up at night with the lights on, so the slat faces block sightlines from street level; down by day to filter light and deflect the sun. If someone looks down at you from above, tilt down.

Which way should vertical blinds face for privacy?

Rotate the vanes so the convex, outward-curving side faces the street. Diffused light passes between the vanes while direct sightlines are blocked.

Can people see through blinds at night when the lights are on?

Through the gaps, yes, if the slats are flat or tilted the wrong way. Tilt up and close them further until only the slat faces show from outside. A blockout roller behind the venetian gives total night privacy.

Which way should blinds tilt in winter and summer?

In summer, tilt the slats up to send the sun to the ceiling and keep heat off the room. In winter, tilt them down so the low sun warms the floor, and open the blinds fully on sunny days.

Do 25mm or 50mm slats give better privacy?

25mm overlaps more tightly at the same angle; 50mm needs a slightly steeper tilt. Both close fully.
