Fly Screens, Insect Screens & Security Screens — South Africa
Keep the breeze, lose the pests, and protect what matters. Precision screens for coastal homes across the Garden Route and nationwide.
Screens help you live with doors and windows open. This hub explains the differences between fly screens, security screens and full insect screen systems for South Africa.
What is the difference between fly screens, insect screens and security screens in South Africa?
- Fly screens use fine aluminium mesh to block mosquitoes, flies and midges. Lightest option, no security value, best for gentle coastal breezes.
- Insect screens are heavier-grade and block smaller insects including no-see-ums common in Garden Route summer. Available in pet-resistant and child-safe frames.
- Security screens use marine-grade stainless steel mesh bonded to an aluminium frame. They stop insects and intruders simultaneously. SABS-rated options available.
- Baboon-proof screens add reinforced framing and tamper-resistant fixings for homes near the Knysna Forest and Plett Nature Reserve.
- All CB screens use aluminium frames. Garden Route: installed by Custom Blinds directly. Nationwide: via our Handyman Direct partner network.

Which screen materials survive Garden Route coastal conditions?
The Garden Route’s combination of salt air, UV exposure, and humidity destroys cheap screens within a year. We specify materials that are proven in these conditions.
All our screens are supplied by Corner Star, South Africa’s leading screen manufacturer. We don’t use imported generics.
Where does Custom Blinds install screens?
Garden Route (direct installation by Duncan): Knysna, George, Plettenberg Bay, Sedgefield, Wilderness, Brenton-on-Sea, Buffalo Bay, Mossel Bay, and surrounds. Free on-site measurement and consultation.
National (via Handyman Direct): Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, and all major metros. We supply the screens and coordinate professional installation through our national partner network.
Whether you need fly screens for a Knysna lagoon-front home or security screens for a Johannesburg estate, the process starts with photos of your windows and doors.
How does the screen consultation and installation process work?
Frequently Asked Questions: Fly Screens, Insect Screens & Security Screens
Can screens be colour matched to my window frames?
Yes. Aluminium frames can be powder coated to match most window and door colours, including charcoal, white, bronze, and natural aluminium.
Are your screens suitable for coastal homes?
All screens we supply are specified for coastal conditions — corrosion-resistant aluminium frames, UV-stabilised mesh, and marine-grade stainless steel for security applications.
Do I need fly screens or security screens?
Fly screens keep insects out while letting air in. Security screens add physical intrusion protection using stainless steel mesh. If you want both insect and security protection, security screens do both jobs.
Can you install screens on sliding doors?
Yes. We fit screens on hinged doors, sliding doors, stacking sliders, windows, and fixed panels. Retractable screen systems are available for large openings.
Do baboons get through fly screens?
Standard fly screens will not stop a baboon. For baboon-prone areas on the Garden Route, we recommend security-grade stainless steel mesh screens specifically tested for baboon resistance.
How long do screens last?
With quality materials and proper installation, fly screens last 10 to 15 years. Security screens last even longer. Mesh can be replaced without changing the frame if needed.
Do you install screens outside the Garden Route?
Yes. Through our partnership with Handyman Direct, we supply and coordinate screen installations across Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, and all major South African metros.
What is the difference between insect screens and fly screens?
Fly screens are a type of insect screen — the term usually refers to fine-mesh screens for mosquitoes and flies. Insect screens is the broader category that includes fixed screens, retractable systems, and security-grade mesh.
