Architectural Shade Made for the South African Coast
Tensioned fabric structures that protect outdoor living spaces from harsh sun while preserving views and adding sculptural interest. Designed for the Garden Route coast and delivered with the precision your property deserves.
Shade sails are tensioned fabric canopies fixed to posts or building anchors. They block up to 95% of UV, allow airflow, and suit coastal conditions when specified with marine grade hardware. We design, manufacture and install across the Garden Route. Supply only options available for properties outside our service area.
Why They Work on the Coast
Fixed roofing blocks views and traps heat. Umbrellas blow over. Pergolas require planning approval and significant construction.
Shade sails solve the problem differently. The tensioned fabric breathes, letting hot air escape while blocking harmful UV. The angled geometry sheds wind rather than catching it. And because they attach to slim posts or existing structures, they feel like part of the architecture rather than an addition.
For properties where the view matters and the lifestyle demands year round outdoor living, shade sails offer protection without compromise.

Shade Sails Across the Garden Route
From Plettenberg Bay estates to Knysna waterfront homes. Each installation is designed for its specific site, orientation and wind exposure.
Outdoor Rooms That Work All Day
A well designed patio should be usable from morning coffee to evening drinks. Without proper shade, harsh midday sun drives everyone inside just when the weather is at its best.
We position sails to track the sun path specific to your property. Heights and angles are set so the shade falls where you need it, when you need it. The result is an outdoor space that feels like an extension of your home rather than an afterthought.
One sail creates a focal point. Two or three define zones for dining, lounging and entertaining. The geometry becomes part of the design.
Compliant with Aesthetic Guidelines
Many Garden Route estates prohibit fixed shadeports and carports. Shade sails offer an approved alternative when designed to meet specific visual and structural requirements.
We prepare detailed specifications including post positions, fabric colours, fixing methods and engineering certificates. This documentation streamlines the approval process with your HOA or estate management.
Posts are positioned discreetly. Hardware is concealed where possible. The result meets your estate requirements without sacrificing function or style.
Specified for Coastal Conditions
Salt air corrodes standard hardware within months. Inferior fabrics fade, stretch and tear. We specify materials that last.
Fabrics are knitted HDPE from accredited South African suppliers. The knit structure allows airflow while blocking UV. Colours are stabilised against fading. Edges are reinforced and corners are double stitched.
All hardware is marine grade 316 stainless steel. Posts are galvanised steel with powder coat finish. Footings are engineered for the specific wind loads at your site.
This is not the cheapest specification. It is the correct one for properties within salt spray distance of the ocean.

From Consultation to Installation
Every site is different. Sun angles, wind exposure, existing structures and aesthetic preferences all influence the design. We begin with an on site assessment to understand exactly what your property needs.
Site Assessment
We visit your property to assess sun path, prevailing winds, fixing points and visual impact. You will receive a design recommendation with layout options and material specifications.
Design and Approval
Detailed drawings show post positions, sail dimensions and fixing methods. For managed estates we prepare the documentation required for HOA approval.
Manufacture
Sails are cut and sewn to your exact dimensions. Reinforced corners, UV stabilised thread and marine grade fittings are standard on all installations.
Installation
Posts are set in engineered footings. Hardware is fitted and tensioned correctly. We walk you through care and maintenance before we leave.
What You Need to Know
Will a shade sail cope with Garden Route wind
Yes, when designed correctly. We use strong anchors and 316 stainless fittings, set correct tension and vary fixing heights so wind spills off the fabric rather than loading it. For severe weather warnings we recommend releasing sails temporarily. The fabric is designed to be removed and refitted easily.
Are shade sails waterproof
Standard HDPE shade cloth is breathable rather than waterproof. It will shed light rain when installed with proper fall but is not suitable for wet weather cover. Waterproof PVC membranes are available for sites where rain protection is essential, though these require stronger fixings and proper drainage planning.
Do I need plans or permission
Requirements vary. Some municipalities treat shade sails as temporary structures requiring no approval. Managed estates typically require HOA sign off with detailed specifications. We prepare all necessary documentation and can liaise with your estate manager or local authority if required.
What hardware grade for coastal properties
Marine grade 316 stainless steel is the only appropriate choice within salt spray distance of the ocean. Standard 304 stainless will pit and corrode. Galvanised fittings will rust. We do not offer lesser specifications for coastal installations.
How long will a shade sail last
Quality HDPE fabrics carry warranties of 10 years or more and many installations remain serviceable for 15 years with proper care. Lifespan depends on UV exposure, wind loads and maintenance. Hardware should outlast the fabric when correctly specified.
Can you attach to my house
Often yes, but the loads are significant. We assess the structure and may recommend additional bracing or freestanding posts if the existing construction cannot safely accept the tension loads. Safety is not negotiable.
Do you supply for self installation
Yes. We can manufacture sails to your dimensions with all hardware included for collection or delivery. This option suits properties outside our installation area or clients with capable contractors. We provide detailed fixing instructions.
What does a shade sail installation cost
Pricing depends on size, number of sails, fabric specification and site complexity. As a guide, a single residential sail with two new posts typically starts in the mid tens of thousands. Multi sail installations and complex sites are quoted individually after site assessment.
