No-Drill Blinds South Africa: What Actually Works
What are no-drill blinds and how do they attach without screws in South Africa?
- No-drill blinds use tension brackets, grip-fit clamps, or magnetic systems to mount inside a window frame without any screws or wall damage
- Tension brackets press against the inside of a recess using friction, best for PVC and aluminium frames with a flat inner surface
- Grip-fit or clamp-fit brackets grip the face of the frame from outside, suited to most standard SA aluminium window profiles
- Magnetic systems attach to steel or powder-coated frames. Fastest to install but only work on compatible metal surfaces
- No-drill blinds are the best solution for rental properties, apartments with body corporate rules, and heritage homes
- Custom Blinds supplies made-to-measure no-drill roller blinds that ship flat and install in under five minutes with no tools

What are no-drill blinds and which system works best in South Africa?
- No-drill blinds fit inside your window frame without any screws, brackets or damage
- Three main systems exist: grip-fit (clamp-on), magnetic and spring-tension
- Spring-tension is the most reliable and fully adjustable for South African conditions, handling heat, humidity and wide openings
- Custom Blinds supplies tension no-drill roller blinds online across South Africa and installs locally on the Garden Route
- Available in blockout and sheer fabrics. Cordless operation as standard

Can you get adjustable blinds without drilling?
- Yes. Spring-tension no-drill blinds are fully adjustable: you can raise, lower and lock them at any height without screws, brackets or wall damage
- Tension blinds use an internal spring mechanism that grips the inside of your window frame. They adjust smoothly and hold position at any point along the window
- Available in both blockout and sheer fabrics, so you can control light and privacy while keeping the blind fully adjustable for airflow or view
- Grip-fit and magnetic systems also avoid drilling, but they are less adjustable and less reliable over time in South African heat and humidity
- Custom Blinds ships adjustable tension no-drill blinds nationwide with free delivery. Garden Route customers get professional fitting included

If you want no-drill blinds that actually stay up, go with spring-tension. Grip-fit clamps slip in South African heat. Magnets weaken over time. Tension systems hold firm on aluminium, wood and steel frames with zero marks. No-drill blinds are available online with free delivery or read on for the full comparison.

How do grip-fit no-drill blinds attach to a window frame?
Grip-fit brackets clip onto the rubber bead of an opening window sash without drilling. The bracket grips the bead from behind, holding the blind headrail in place. Works on most uPVC and aluminium frames with a visible rubber seal. Not suitable for fixed-pane windows with no bead, or frames where the bead sits flush.
Grip-fit blinds use small brackets that clamp onto the rubber bead of your opening window sash. They look neat on smaller windows and work on most uPVC and aluminium frames with a clear bead.

The problem in South Africa is heat. Clamps slip on older or sun-softened rubber, which is common on the coast. They can also leave tiny marks on the bead if adjusted frequently. We still get call-backs in summer when clamps loosen in Garden Route heat.
Our verdict: Fine for small, light blinds on newer windows. Not dependable for large openings or blockout fabric.
How do magnetic no-drill blinds work?
Quick Answer
How do magnetic no-drill blinds work?
Magnetic blinds attach via strong magnets that bond directly to a steel window frame, usually with adhesive pads. They leave no marks when removed correctly and are the easiest system to take down for cleaning. The limitation is frame compatibility — magnets only grip steel. Aluminium and uPVC frames, standard in most newer South African homes, will not hold a magnetic blind.
Magnetic blinds rely on strong magnets that stick to a steel window frame, usually with tape or adhesive pads. They are truly non-marking when removed correctly and very easy to take down for cleaning.
The limitation is that they only work on steel frames. Most new estates in South Africa use aluminium, which means magnets are not an option. On wider blinds, magnets weaken over time in summer heat and the fabric sags in the middle.
Our verdict: We stopped offering magnetic systems years ago. Neat for very specific situations, but not dependable for daily use on the coast.
How do tension and spring-tension no-drill blinds work?
Quick Answer
How do tension no-drill blinds work?
A spring inside the roller tube is tensioned by twisting the bottom bar. The blind presses outward against both sides of the window recess, holding itself in place with friction. No brackets, clamps, or adhesive touch the frame. Works on any recess with a flat surface on each side, regardless of frame material. The recess must be deep enough to hold the roller — typically at least 45mm.
A strong internal spring inside the roller tube is tensioned by twisting the bottom bar. The blind presses firmly between the two sides of the window recess. No brackets, no clamps, no magnets on the frame.
Why tension is the clear winner for most South African homes
- Zero damage or marks. Nothing fixes into the frame
- Holds heavy blinds. We regularly do 2.0 m wide blockout rollers on tension
- Works on aluminium, wood, steel and tiled reveals
- Stays straight for years when properly sized. No slipping or sagging
- Remove and refit in seconds for window cleaning
- Completely child-safe with cordless operation as standard

What has real-world testing taught us about no-drill blinds?
We have fitted hundreds of all three systems across the Garden Route. Here is what we see in practice: Homeowners appreciate being able to adjust the blind height throughout the day for light and airflow control.
- Grip-fit: Lots of call-backs in summer when clamps slip on softened rubbers
- Magnetic: We stopped offering them years ago because long-term hold was unreliable
- Tension: Almost zero complaints, even on wide blockout blinds after years of use
“If you want true no-drill blinds that survive Garden Route heat and coastal air, tension systems are the only ones we trust on large windows and doors.”

Why our no-drill roller blinds use metal chain
Quick Answer
What sets Custom Blinds no-drill roller blinds apart?
Custom Blinds® no-drill roller blinds are supplied with metal chain as standard — not plastic. Metal chain handles daily use and sustained UV exposure without degrading, snapping or losing tension. It is the specification detail that separates a blind built to last from one built to a price.
Plastic chain is the industry default because it costs less to source. Under South African UV conditions — sustained year-round, not seasonal — plastic becomes brittle. Repeated daily cycling fatigues the links. When a chain snaps the blind is effectively finished.
Metal chain does not degrade under UV. It does not fatigue under normal use. The same chain that operates the blind on the first day operates it years later. We specify it on every no-drill roller blind we supply because a blind worth choosing should be built to last, not just to fit.
“The chain is the part that fails first on cheaper no-drill blinds. We made metal chain standard across our no-drill range because a well-made blind should outlast the window it hangs in, not the other way around.”
Duncan Kane, Custom Blinds®

No-drill aluminium venetian blinds — a different kind of window covering
No-drill mounting is not limited to roller blinds. For windows that suit a slat blind — rooms where precise light control at any angle matters more than a clean fabric face — Custom Blinds® supplies 25mm aluminium venetian blinds on the same tension no-drill system. Cord-operated, made to your exact measurements, zero screws into the frame.
Aluminium venetians bring something a roller blind cannot: the ability to tilt the slats to any position between fully open and fully closed — cutting monitor glare while keeping the room bright, or admitting morning light while maintaining privacy from the street. For anyone who has ever wanted that kind of control over their windows, the venetian is the right blind regardless of how it is mounted.
Two 25mm finishes are available:
- Plain aluminium — powder-coated, moisture-resistant, non-warping, UV-stable. Wipes clean in seconds. Looks the same in year five as year one. The straightforward specification for kitchens, bathrooms, home offices and any room where performance and longevity are the brief.
- Aluwood venetian — the same aluminium core with an authentic wood-grain finish. For living areas and bedrooms where a warm, considered aesthetic is as important as the performance underneath it.
Both are made to measure and ship nationwide with free delivery. For the full aluminium venetian range see the aluminium venetian blinds guide.
