Wilderness takes moisture from two directions. Salt air off the Indian Ocean, damp off the Touw River and the lakes behind the dune. Timber feels both. PVC does not.
Why do Wilderness homes need PVC shutters?
Wilderness is unusual even by Garden Route standards. The village sits on a narrow strip between the Indian Ocean and the Touw River, with Island Lake, Langvlei and Rondevlei lying immediately inland. Homes here are exposed to airborne salt from the sea and to sustained humidity from the water on the other side.
Timber shutters in these conditions need sanding, sealing and repainting every two to three years. The louvre mechanisms stiffen as wood swells through a wet winter and shrinks again when the berg wind arrives. Within five years, many timber shutters in Wilderness homes are visibly deteriorating.

Which Wilderness areas does Custom Blinds serve?
Wilderness village and the Touw River mouth. Direct ocean exposure on one side, river damp on the other. PVC is the sensible choice here. Timber deteriorates quickly on the seaward elevations.
Wilderness Heights. Elevated position above the village with long views and sustained wind exposure. Larger window openings suit bi fold PVC shutters, which fold back clear of the reveal.
Kleinkrantz. Coastal properties east of the village. Holiday homes benefit from PVC shutters that need no maintenance between visits, and security shutters for ground floor protection while the house stands empty.
Hoekwil and Touwsranten. Above the lakes, with the humidity that comes with them. PVC resists the sustained moisture that causes timber to swell and stick. Established homes benefit from a shutter upgrade during renovation.

Do you install shutters across all of Wilderness?
Yes. We cover Wilderness village, Wilderness Heights, Kleinkrantz, Hoekwil, Touwsranten and the surrounding lakes area. Duncan conducts site visits across greater Wilderness.
Is Wilderness too far from Knysna for installation?
No. Wilderness sits on the N2 between George and Sedgefield, and Custom Blinds services the full Garden Route from Mossel Bay to Plettenberg Bay. Duncan visits Wilderness regularly for site assessments and measurements.
Are PVC shutters better than timber for Wilderness conditions?
For most Wilderness homes, yes. Timber shutters in salt air and lake humidity need repainting every two to three years and the louvres stiffen as the wood moves. PVC does not absorb moisture, so it does not swell or stick. The total cost of ownership over five to ten years strongly favours PVC.
How long does shutter installation take in Wilderness?
Most homes are completed in a single day. Manufacturing takes two to four weeks from measurement. Lead time is confirmed at quote stage.
