Outdoor living

Outdoor projects where awnings, outdoor blinds and shutters are used to manage wind, sun and exposure without turning patios and decks into closed-off rooms.

What we’ve learned from outdoor installations over nearly two decades:

In over 17 years of installing outdoor blinds and awnings along the Garden Route, failures are rarely about the product. They almost always come down to wind exposure, changing weather, fixing points and correct product use. We spend time explaining these in our consulatations.

Outdoor blinds

Outdoor blinds are often the biggest transformation for patios and braai areas.
They reduce wind, soften glare and protect furniture while keeping the space visually open.

Awnings

Awnings are used where overhead protection is needed without losing daylight or views.
Louvre roofs, retractable arms and patio shade systems each suit different structures and wind conditions.

Exterior shutters

Exterior shutters are used where privacy, weather protection and airflow need to work together.
Adjustable slats allow breeze and light while shielding against sun and exposure.

What we’ve learned from real outdoor installations

Outdoor systems never fail but environments do vary. Coastal wind, shifting foundations and exposure levels change how products perform over time. This is what actually determines success.

  • Louvre awnings are water-resistant by design. With correct installation and pitch they perform exceptionally well, but no louvre system can be marketed as fully waterproof in every environment.
  • Outdoor blinds rely entirely on fixation quality. Weak substrates or rushed mounting create movement, not product failure.
  • Wind direction matters more than wind strength. Side-channel systems and correct orientation are what make outdoor spaces usable year-round.
  • Automation improves durability. Systems that are used correctly and consistently last longer and perform better.
  • There are no straight houses. Every successful outdoor install adapts to real walls, real levels and real conditions.

Indoor blinds for real homes

This part of the portfolio focuses on how we use indoor blinds to solve everyday problems in real South African homes:
light control, privacy, glare reduction and comfort in bedrooms, lounges and home offices.

What we’ve learned from indoor blind installations over thousands of windows:

After measuring and installing blinds across hundreds of homes, one thing is consistent: no window is perfectly square, and no single blind solves light, privacy and sleep on its own. Good results come from system thinking, not promises.

Roller and Duo Roller Blinds

Roller and duo roller & double roller zebra blinds are your clean, modern workhorses. They keep lines simple, hide neatly
above the window and work in almost every room.

We use them when clients want flexible privacy and control over daylight without heavy fabrics. Sheer or screen rollers keep
the view while cutting glare. Blockout rollers support deep sleep in bedrooms and holiday homes.

Duo roller blinds combine a screen and a blockout in one system. By pairing two fabrics we can move from soft daytime light
to full privacy at night using a single, compact headrail.

  • Ideal for bedrooms, lounges, home offices and rental properties.
  • Good choice when clients want a minimal, uncluttered look.
  • Strong option for coastal homes where fabrics need to be practical and easy to clean.

Venetian Blinds (Aluminium, Synthetic and Wood)

Venetian blinds are about precise control. By tilting the slats we can change privacy and light level without losing
ventilation or needing to raise the blind fully.

Aluminium venetians are slim, durable and well suited to kitchens, studies and compact openings. Synthetic and plaswood
venetians handle moisture and coastal conditions where real wood would move or swell. Wood venetians add warmth and a
more traditional feel where clients want the look of timber inside.

We use venetians when the brief is fine control of light and privacy, especially on windows that are opened and closed often.

  • Good for kitchens, bathrooms, studies and offices.
  • Works well on smaller to medium sized windows and doors.
  • Choice of aluminium, synthetic or wood to match humidity, budget and style.

Honeycomb Blinds for Insulation and Comfort

Honeycomb blinds are our go to when a client cares about temperature, glare and comfort as much as appearance. The cellular
structure traps air in the fabric which helps soften heat in summer and reduce heat loss in winter.

We use blockout honeycombs in bedrooms and media rooms where deep sleep or screen use is important. Light filtering
honeycombs work well in living spaces where you still want soft daylight without harsh glare.

In coastal homes they are especially useful on large openings that get strong sun or shifting temperatures through the day.

  • Best for bedrooms, nurseries, TV rooms and temperature sensitive spaces.
  • Good option for clients who do not want heavy curtains but still need insulation.
  • Pairs well with automation for hard to reach or large windows.

Duncan’s Thoughts

“Honeycomb blinds justify their higher price through insulation and comfort. Venetians remain one of the most adaptable solutions for light and privacy. Duo roller systems quietly solve more problems than most people realise.

No window is perfectly square. Over years of measuring and fitting, we’ve developed small adjustments that make blinds sit cleaner, closer and more balanced, even in older homes.”

Indoor blinds that actually work in real homes

Indoors, every room is a different problem to solve – light, privacy, sleep, screens, neighbours, and the reality that no window is perfectly square. We design around how your family actually lives, not just what looks good in a catalogue.

What we’ve learned from indoor installations:

  • Honeycomb blinds cost more, but they earn their place – insulation, comfort and light control in one system, especially in bedrooms and home offices.
  • Venetian blinds are the quiet hero: there is almost always a slat, colour and finish that solves privacy and light in one go, and they’re often the best value for money.
  • Duo roller blinds are the “hidden secret” – you get a sheer and a blockout in one system, so you don’t have to choose between view and darkness.
  • No blind is truly 100% blackout. We can add aluminium side channels on roller blinds, but the most reliable solution we’ve found is a blockout roller behind shutters – more cost-effective than structural changes and highly effective.
  • Windows are rarely square. Over the years we’ve developed small tricks in measuring, fixing and trimming so the blinds sit neat, close and balanced, even on imperfect openings.

Where indoor blinds shine:

  • Bedrooms that need darkness at night but soft light during the day.
  • Lounges and TV rooms where glare on screens is worse than the sun itself.
  • Home offices where privacy, Zoom backgrounds and screen comfort all matter at once.

Security that still feels like home

Security is a growing concern in the Garden Route, but no one wants their home to feel like a prison.
These solutions focus on protection, airflow and usability, without destroying the look and feel of the space.

What we’ve learned from security installs across coastal homes:

Security is not static. Over years of installations in baboon-active and coastal areas, we’ve had to continually adapt spacing, fixings and system choice as primate behaviour, airflow needs and daily use patterns evolve.

LockLatch High-Security Sliding Door Locks

LockLatch is designed specifically to secure sliding doors, which are one of the most common weak points
in South African homes. It reinforces the existing door system rather than relying on light factory locks.

We recommend LockLatch where clients want a discreet, built-in solution that protects without adding visible bars
or screens. It is especially effective on patio doors and large aluminium sliders.

  • Purpose-built for sliding doors.
  • Strengthens existing door frames instead of replacing them.
  • Discreet security that does not change the look of the opening.

Lock-style latches offer daily convenience and ventilation. Security and fly screens remain a long-term favourite for good reason. Bars continue to evolve as primates adapt, and spacing and fixing strategies change constantly. In many openings, a well-designed screen or latch solution achieves the goal more effectively and at a lower cost than bars.

Baboon Bars and Fixed Security Bars

Baboon bars are common in the Garden Route for a reason. They prevent wildlife damage, add burglary protection
and create a physical barrier without sealing off the home.

We install these where homes are exposed to nature, ground-level access or repeated wildlife interference.
No house is perfectly straight, and older homes in particular need careful measuring and fitting to avoid stress
on frames and fixings.

  • Ideal for rural, estate and wildlife-adjacent homes.
  • Prevents break-ins while still allowing airflow.
  • Installed with real-world adjustments, not factory assumptions.

Security Screens and Ventilation Protection

Security screens combine airflow with serious protection. They allow doors and windows to remain open
while keeping insects, intruders and wildlife out.

We use security screens when clients want to live with doors open in summer without compromising safety.
These systems are engineered to resist forced entry while maintaining visibility and ventilation.

  • Strong security with full airflow.
  • Maintains views and natural light.
  • Well suited to coastal homes and warm climates.

Security that respects how you live, not just how you lock up

Security on the Garden Route is never “fit and forget”. Primates get smarter, habits change, and airflow still matters on hot, humid days. We design security around behaviour, views and ventilation, not just metal in a frame.

What we’ve learned from security installs:

  • LockLatch-type solutions are brilliant when airflow and quick daily use matter. They’re often the simplest way to make doors and windows feel safe without changing the whole opening.
  • Security and fly screens are the big-ticket items, and there’s a reason they’ve been around for decades – they keep views, breeze and light while quietly doing the hard work.
  • Bars are never “one and done”. We continually adjust how we specify and install because primates figure out weaknesses. Baboon bars keep moving closer together for exactly this reason.
  • Sometimes a screen or LockLatch is the better spend. In some openings, a well-designed screen or latch meets the security need, keeps airflow, and saves money compared to heavy bar work.
  • We work with proven systems. Partner ranges like Cornerstar and other international suppliers bring tested ratings and hardware – we match those to your specific opening and risk, not the other way around.

Where these solutions make the biggest difference:

  • Kitchen and bedroom windows that must stay open for air but still feel secure.
  • Doors to decks and braai areas where you want to move freely without feeling barricaded.
  • Homes in baboon-active zones where standard bars no longer keep up with primate behaviour.
