No Drill Blinds in South Africa

Want blinds without drilling into aluminium frames, tiles, or walls?
In South Africa, the most reliable and repeatable no-drill method is a
tension-mount blind system.
That is the only no-drill method we specify and support.

We do not use adhesive pads, glue tapes, or clip-on shortcuts.
Tension mounting gives a clean finish and predictable holding strength when it’s specified correctly for your window.

Quick answer:

  • No drill blinds are achieved using a tension-mount system inside the window recess.
  • Only method we use: mechanical tension, not adhesive or clamp methods.
  • Best suited to: standard window frames with adequate recess depth and straight surfaces.
  • Not universal: very wide, heavy, or shallow-recess windows may still require drilling for safety.
  • Fast path: choose from our no-drill compatible range, and ask us to confirm fit if you’re unsure.

What “no drill blinds” actually means

“No drill” is not a blind style. It is a mounting method.
The blind is held in place by controlled pressure between the top and bottom of the window recess.

  • No holes in frames or tiles
  • No adhesive failures over time
  • Cleaner for rentals and renovations
  • Removable when specified and installed correctly
Non-negotiable: If tension mounting cannot safely support the blind long-term, we will recommend a drilled installation instead.

Why we only use tension-mount systems

Tension mounting is mechanically reliable because it does not rely on bonding.
That makes it far more predictable than adhesive methods, especially across different surfaces and real-world daily use.

  • Predictable holding strength: when sized correctly for the recess
  • Cleaner finish: no glue lines or residue
  • Better long-term: avoids “silent failure” that can happen with tapes or pads
  • Practical: easy to remove or reposition when needed

If you’ve seen “no drill” methods that use tape or clip-on brackets, we simply don’t support them.
They can work in perfect conditions, until they don’t.

When no-drill works well

  • Window recess is deep enough for the system
  • Recess surfaces are straight and consistent
  • Blind width and weight are within safe limits
  • Indoor windows without repeated impact or high-force handling

When we recommend drilling instead

  • Very wide or heavy blinds
  • Shallow or uneven recesses
  • Openings that get knocked often (high-traffic doors and windows)
  • Any setup where safety and durability are compromised

How to get no-drill blinds right

  1. Measure the recess: width, height, and depth matter.
  2. Check suitability: confirm straight surfaces and safe sizing.
  3. Choose a compatible blind: specified for tension mounting.
  4. Install carefully: even tension, aligned, tested for daily use.

How tension compares to other no-drill systems

Clip-in frame systems

Some no-drill systems use a frame that clips into the rubber beading around uPVC window panes. uPVC is a plastic window frame common in the United Kingdom but rarely used in South African residential construction. Most SA homes have aluminium or wooden frames, which do not have the rubber beading these systems require. Adapter frames exist for other surfaces, though they add cost and complexity.

Snap-fit bracket systems

A newer approach uses brackets that snap onto the window frame without screws. Published performance data on these systems is limited, so direct comparison with tension mounting is difficult at this stage.

Why we use tension

Tension mounting does not depend on rubber beading, adhesive or frame-specific clips. It works on aluminium, wood, steel, tiled reveals and plastered surfaces. The spring mechanism is unaffected by heat, humidity or salt air.

  • Works on every common SA window frame without adapters
  • Mechanical grip — no adhesive to fail
  • Removable with no marks left behind
  • Lower cost than clip-in frame systems
Our position: Tension is the only system we are confident specifying across the range of windows and conditions we see in South Africa.

No drill blinds FAQs

Are no drill blinds safe?
Yes, when tension-mounted correctly and within size limits. If your window or blind size exceeds safe limits, we recommend drilling.

Do you use adhesive no drill systems?
No. We only use tension-mount systems because they are mechanically reliable.

Can no drill blinds be removed?
Yes. Tension-mounted blinds can be removed without holes when installed correctly.

Are no drill blinds suitable for rentals?
Often yes, provided the recess is suitable and the blind size is within safe limits.

Technical checklist

  • Mounting method: tension mount only
  • Recess depth: must meet minimum system requirements
  • Blind size and weight: must be within safe tension limits
  • Recess surfaces: straight and consistent
  • Decision: tension mount or drilled installation based on safety
