What are the differences between PVC and Aluminium Shutters?

Choosing between PVC and aluminium shutters for your home can be a daunting task but this information should make it easier for you to make an informed decision that best suits your needs and preferences.

Here’s a short guide to help you choose:

Design:

Both PVC shutters and aluminium security shutters offer a sleek look that can be customised with finishes but the classic white colour remains the most popular for both and is what we recommend. Both come with a variety of opening systems and panels configurations to maximise your views or their functionality.

Affordability:

PVC shutters are generally more affordable than security shutters. We have however recently launched an affordable range of security shutters that make them accessible for more homeowners.

Durability:

Security shutters have a clear advantage over PVC shutters when it comes to durability. They are more resistant to impact, weather, and wear and tear. This can make them a great option for homes and businesses in high-risk areas. PVC performs better in “wet areas” such as kitchens and showers and has more indoor decor applications. With proper care and services they have the same longevity as aluminium.

Security:

If security is a concern for you, security shutters may be the better option. They are stronger and more secure, which can help deter intruders and help to protect your property. These units can be placed on the exterior of the home as well for extra peace of mind. PVC shutters in the interior may not repel entry but have acted as very efficient deterrents.

Energy Efficiency:

Both PVC and security shutters are energy efficient. They are designed to keep out heat and cold by louvre control making them ideal for homes in areas with harsh weather conditions. The PVC does not retain the cold or heat as much as aluminium and they generally perform better in that regard. Aluminium shutters on the exterior of a home do wonders with extreme conditions such as hail, downpours and gales.

Maintenance:

Both options are relatively easy to maintain and clean. PVC shutters can be wiped down with a damp cloth to remove dirt and dust, while security shutters can be cleaned with a mild detergent and water. We recommend signing up for our service agreements with all our products that help ensure the longevity of our products and your investment.

In summary, PVC shutters are a great option if you want a stylish and energy-efficient window covering. However, if security and exterior applications are your top priorities, security shutters are the way to go.
